Now it's up to all the parties who would benefit to make the idea a reality. In a joint meeting of the Ashland City Council and the Parks and Recreation Commission Tuesday night, Black suggested building a deeper, wider pool on the site of the existing Daniel Meyer Pool, with a cover to make the pool usable in the winter months. Southern Oregon University's decision to close and not replace the pool in the university's McNeil Pavilion when the athletic complex was torn down and rebuilt left the community without a competition-sized pool open to the public. Black's suggestion offers one way to fill that need. As always, cost is the primary obstacle. The city does not have the money in its budget to build a pool without asking taxpayers to contribute. A bond measure could be put to voters, but there are others who should contribute as well. Ashland School District and other districts in the area also have a need for a competition-sized pool, and it's reasonable to ask them to share the cost of constructing one, as well as paying fees for use of the pool for swim team practices and for competitions. Adult swimmers also could contribute through fundraising activities and fees. A pool project would be good for the community, and it can happen if those who would benefit the most get involved in making it happen.
