The piano and & cello recital is at 8 p.m. Friday, June 4. All seats $20. The program features "Fantasy Pieces, Opus 73" by Robert Schumann, "Sonata in E minor for Cello and piano, opus 38" by Johannes Brahms and "Sonata in C Major for cello & piano, opus 119" by Sergei Prokofiev Rachelle McCabe is an international recitalist and Master Teacher. She has performed concertos with the Seattle, Pittsburgh, Oregon and Victoria symphonies and has been heard on NPR's "Performance Today," CBC, and PBS television. McCabe heads the piano program at Oregon State University where she has been named a Master Teacher by the college of Liberal Arts. Her degrees are from Washington, Julliard, and the University of Michigan. Martin Hornstein and Rachelle McCabe have been colleagues since their student days at the Julliard School in New York where Martin studied with Harvey Shapiro and Rachelle studied with Ania Dorfmann. Martin is the founding member of the Vienna Altenberg Trio. Hornstein regularly teaches at international master classes and is in charge of seminar courses for chamber music at the Conservatory of the City of Vienna. He plays the "ex van Zweygberg" cello, built in Piacenza in 1743 by Giovanni Battista Guadagnini. The two will lead a piano and cello workshop Saturday, June 5, at 10:30 a.m., $5 students and teachers $10 general public. The informal workshop involves the nature, preparation, and practice of chamber music ensemble work, especially that of an experienced cellist and pianist. The two artists will explore the process of coming together to form a collaborative interpretation of great chamber works, including music heard in the previous night's concert, but also unrehearsed repertoire so that the experience can be observed as fresh and spontaneous. Some of the workshop will be devoted to working with student or community chamber performers in a master class situation. Dialogue with the participants and audience will be encouraged.
