AT STAKE: The visiting Fighting Saints were picked to win the Frontier Conference in a preseason coaches' poll, while the Raiders (1-0) were voted third, but both squads bring championship aspirations into a showdown that was voted the NAIA Game of the Week.  HOW TO FOLLOW: Live streaming video and live stats will be available at souraiders.com. » Social News They've played a combined one game and the playoffs are still months away, but there’s still plenty of big-game buzz surrounding today’s Frontier Conference showdown between No. 2 Carroll and No. 22 Southern Oregon. The two programs with league championship aspirations kickoff their 10-game conference schedule at 1 p.m. at Walter A. Phillips Field, where SOU hasn’t hosted a game since 1983. The game was chosen by fan vote the NAIA Game of the Week, and for good reason. It pits the nation’s top offense (SOU) against one of its most stingy defenses, and comes preloaded with some juicy head-to-head history. Carroll owns a 3-1 series advantage, and all four of those meetings were huge — the first two were quarterfinal playoff wins for the Fighting Saints, the third was a victory for SOU in 2012 that essentially ended Carroll’s 12-year conference reign, and the fourth tilted the 2013 league race Carroll’s way with three games left in the regular season. This time, the loser will have plenty of time to recover before the rematch Oct. 18 in Helena, Mont., so unlike those previous showdowns there will be no national or league title hopes hanging in the balance. But still at stake will be early-season momentum and a certain amount of clout, since both teams will be trying to make a statement on a national stage. "You see the big games around the country this weekend — Oregon against Michigan State, Stanford against USC — at our level of football, that's what this is: the game of the nation," SOU coach Craig Howard said. "Both teams have national title aspirations. They've done it six times and we haven't done it yet, but this is the team to beat if we want to." Southern Oregon will have the advantage of having already revved up its engine in what turned out to be a very encouraging test run — last week’s 51-14 road win over Menlo. The Raiders looked like the team that’s led the nation in total offense and points the past two seasons, jumping out to a 48-0 lead midway through the third quarter and amassing 618 yards of total offense, a program record for a season opener. Senior quarterback Austin Dodge completed 23 of 35 passes for 321 yards and four touchdowns before taking a seat in the third, and receiver Dylan Young had seven catches for 110 yards and three TDs. Possibly more significant for the Raiders was the performance of their defense. The unit that surrendered 440 yards and 31.7 points per game last season held Menlo scoreless through three quarters before the substitutes took over and allowed a pair of late touchdowns. That bodes well for a team that’s scored 82 points combined in its last two meetings with Carroll. "I thought our defense was outstanding in the opening game and some of our guys played the best game of their careers," Howard said. "Continuing that against Carroll is going to be an enormous challenge but an exciting one.” Carroll, which was voted the league favorite in a preseason coaches’ poll, hasn't played yet, but the Raiders have a pretty good idea what to expect since the Saints return their top offensive player from a year ago in running back Dustin Rinker. The 5-foot-9, 210-pound Rinker rushed for 160 yards and a touchdown against the Raiders last year and is on pace to break Carroll’s all-time rushing record.
