Six-week course on the Bard "Who Wrote Shakespeare?" a six-week course about the mystery of Shakespeare authorship is one of the spring offerings from Southern Oregon University Extended Campus Programs. The class will meet from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Monday evenings, from April 16 to May 21 at SOU. Instructor Carole Sue Lipman will explore the question of who really wrote the Shakespeare works, discussing the traditional point of view as well as the alternative theories for Sir Francis Bacon, Christopher Marlowe and Edward DeVere 17th Earl of Oxford. The Shakespeare authorship question has been vigorously debated for over a century by such public figures as Mark Twain and Sigmund Freud, who wrote their doubts that the Man from Stratford was the Bard. More recently, doubters include actors Sir John Gielgud and Sir Derek Jacobi, and also Justice John Paul Stevens of the U.S. Supreme Court. Lipman, who has researched the controversy for a documentary film, is a graduate of Syracuse University and the president of the Shakespeare Authorship Roundtable, a non-profit organization dedicated to an open-minded exploration of Shakespeare and the Elizabethan Age.
