Student speakers Elaina and Nisha Supahan, both 22, are among 1,083 SOU students receiving bachelor’s or master’s degrees at the 9 a.m. event, which will be held at SOU’s Mountain Arena, or Raider Stadium. Fifty nursing students from the Ashland satellite of the Oregon Health Sciences University will also be honored at commencement. The Supahans will introduce themselves using the Karuk language and share the story of their growth from a small town to the university, where they flourished as scholars and leaders. Elaina earned a degree in geography, a certificate in Native American studies and minors in land-use planning and applied multimedia. Nisha is a photojournalism major who also earned a certificate in Native American studies and minors in photography and applied multimedia. During the 2002-03 academic year, the sisters co-taught a language class on campus and they have remained active in Karuk ceremonies, gatherings and events, as well as inter-tribal work in Siskiyou and Humboldt counties. Following graduation, they will return to Northern California, where they plan to work on Karuk language revitalization. Oregon Shakespeare Festival Artistic Director Libby Appel, who will be awarded an honorary doctorate degree, is also slated to speak at commencement — her first address to a graduating class. Appel said she will explore the place of arts and letters in people’s lives. “In perilous times, why do the arts still matter?” Appel said Friday, though she wouldn’t answer her own question before delivering the speech. Appel, who has served as artistic director for 10 seasons, is the first woman to hold the highest artistic post at OSF. “Her imprint on the interpretation of great works of literature and her gift for bringing them alive in theater is celebrated locally and around the world,” said SOU President Elisabeth Zinser. “We are inspired also by her contributions to the SOU/OSF partnership, including internships, educational programming and employment of university alumni.” Appel will receive the third SOU honorary doctorate. The award began in 2003 and is given annually to an individual who has earned a distinguished national or international reputation and who demonstrates ideals and commitments that relate to the SOU mission and aspirations. The number of SOU graduates this year is down slightly from 2004, when 1,177 degrees were conferred. At Saturday’s event, 20 graduates will be receiving two degrees, 32 of the 121 international students enrolled in the university will graduate and 13 students will earn accelerated baccalaureate degrees, the largest class of students since the three-year bachelor’s degree program began in 1997. Students who completed graduation requirements during the summer or fall of 2004 and the winter or spring of 2005 will be honored Saturday. The ceremony begins at 9 a.m. and is open to the public.
