By Maggie McGehee Ashland Daily Tidings It's time for Ashland School District students to hit the stores, gathering pencils and notebooks and trying to find the perfect back-to-school outfit for their return to the classroom. New students to the district have other concerns - registration, orientation and meeting new friends. ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS New elementary school students in the district can register at their neighborhood school from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21. This registration includes kindergarten children who have not already registered with the district. Evidence of required immunizations must be provided at the time of registration and kindergarten students must also provide a birth certificate showing that the student will be five-years-old before Sept. 1. In an attempt to balance the student populations at each elementary school in the Ashland School District, officials have redrawn the attendance boundaries. The new boundaries go into effect this fall, but the change will only affect new students entering the district, according to District Business Manager Loren Luman. The boundary changes shifts students who traditionally would attend Walker or Lincoln elementary schools to the less-populated Helman Elementary School. Under the attendance boundaries, Helman Elementary School has the largest area of attendance with its boundary stretching from the Southern Pacific Railroad on the south as far as the railroad's intersection with East Main Street. From there the Helman zone's southernmost border is East Main Street from Wightman Street to Walker Avenue, where the boundary shifts north in a direct line with Walker Avenue to Bear Creek, with the creek acting as the southern boundary east to Interstate 5. New students to the district that live in the area north of the Southern Pacific Railroad and East Main Street between Mountain Avenue and a border directly in line with Walker Avenue will now go to Helman instead of Lincoln. Students living north of Bear Creek will also attend Helman. Students living in the area west of Indiana Street from Woodland Drive south along Palmer Road who traditionally would attend Lincoln Elementary School, will now attend Walker Elementary School. ASHLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL Registration for Ashland Middle School students has already begun, but those who could not attend this week's registration have one more chance to register from 8 a.m. to noon on Wednesday, Aug. 29 at the middle school, located at 100 Walker Ave. Registration fees for the middle school include an $18 activity/student body fee and an $8 fine arts fee. The $15 yearbook fee is optional. Students living outside the city limits also have the option of a $35 sports activities fee and the $14 co-curricular, clubs and musical activities fee, but each family who lives outside the city will have a $210 fee cap. ASHLAND HIGH SCHOOL Different registration dates for high school students have been broken down into different groups: new students, freshmen, sophomores, juniors and seniors. Registration will take place at the high school, 201 N. Mountain Ave. Registration for new students is from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 20. New students can pick up registration packets and make an appointment with a counselor for scheduling by stopping by the high school during office hours Monday through Friday. Freshmen are encouraged to register early so they can have their Fresh Start assignment. Freshmen can register from noon to 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 22. Sophomore registration is from 9 to 11:30 a.m. or 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 24. Juniors can register from 9 to 11:30 a.m. or 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 23. Senior registration is from noon to 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 21. Students who cannot make it to the above times will also be able to register from 5:30 to 8 p.m. on either Tuesday, Aug. 21 or Wednesday, Aug. 22. Registration fees at the high school include a $10 student body card fee, a $5 fee for mailing costs, a $3 student health services fee and a $20 parking permit fee for juniors and seniors. There is also an optional $35 yearbook fee in addition to fees associated with specific courses at the high school. Email your...
