This is the first major improvement to our Plaza, in addition to the hanging baskets, in over three years. It's a significant improvement, with a budget of $6,500, according the city administrator’s office, and the city deserves our thanks. It’s the schmutz! Now that the borders of the Plaza have been somewhat improved, there remains the major issue of the dark gray, permeable pavers and the overall Plaza design. Although it seemed to make sense at the outset, the city may not have realized how much regular maintenance a permeable paver system requires. We’ve read that the gravel between the permeable pavers needs routine cleaning of foreign matter to retain its permeability, where 95 percent of the surface water drains. There is a term in the industry for such detritus accumulation: schmutzdecke. Loosely translated from the German, this means: crud. The amount of detritus accumulation over the last three years on the Plaza is extreme, and quite tacky-looking. Its upkeep has been totally ignored by the city, and imperils the very function of the permeable paver system. The porous gray pavers need routine cleaning as well. The neglect of this necessary maintenance gives our Plaza an overall seedy appearance. Although the peripheral appearance of our Plaza is improving, the dark gray interior of the Plaza is still an uninviting, hot, and off-putting mess. The city has created in essence, a barren, tacky, black hole for our visitors and residents in the epicenter of our town. Totally the opposite of a welcoming center for our city. Clearly more work on our Plaza needs to be done to make it more hospitable and inviting. Brightening up our Plaza's interior is the next step that must be addressed.
