We won't let people burn, but we'll sell fireworks to adults and children, so they can have fun for about a month. I read where a church is making about a $100 a day for their cause. One serious fire in the area and that $100 per day will look very miniscule. One small fire on a windy day and everyone will be scrambling to save their family and homes. After the fact, everyone will be saying, "How could this have happened?" It happens every year somewhere else. We are fools. Responsible people and leaders should abate the problem before it happens by banning fireworks. To all the people that live in any kind of high grass, wooded area, or has a wood shingle roof: "man your battle stations." And, whatever you do, don't leave town on July 4th, your home may not be standing when you return. But maybe this year we'll make it through without an incident. Then next year we can hold our breath again, man our battle stations, and just hope one person doesn't do something stupid. Randy Miltier Ashland Fuego coach tries to bridge gap As Fuego FC's head coach, I am compelled to respond to Joan and Dan Thorndike's letter (June 16) that questions my comments about The Fuego vs. La Liga del Valle game (May 28). The Thorndike's perceived my comments as downplaying the skills of the La Liga All Star Team. As head coach, it has been my greatest intention to draw on the high level of talent in the local Mexican league. I have made efforts to recruit La Liga players to Fuego. Until the fore mentioned May 28 game, four promising players from La Liga were practicing and playing with Fuego. Unfortunately, during The Fuego vs. La Liga game, those four players left Fuego and played for La Liga All Stars and became the leading scorers of their team. My goal has been to create a bridge between the white soccer community and the Latino soccer community and build a Southern Oregon All Star Team. While I thought this would happen readily, bringing the rich talent pool together in our region has been challenging. The actual game of Fuego vs. La Liga created more of a sense of separation than of unity, an us against them mentality within our one soccer community. My comment referring to La Liga as a "weaker team" may have fed into this view. Labeling La Liga as "weaker" was meant in comparison to other top West Coast semi-professional teams that Fuego has been playing during this exhibition season. I realize that without having the best La Liga players on the Fuego squad, we will never be truly competitive on the statewide and national levels. I welcome any help in bridging the two soccer communities in the Rogue Valley. Please, contact me with any insights or suggestions. Radovan Dluhy-Smith Ashland '9/11' is a must-see movie On Friday, June 25, I walked to the Varsity Theater and watched Michael Moore's latest film, "Fahrenheit 9/11," and was not disappointed with what I saw on the screen; rather I felt (and still feel) ashamed, angry and appalled with what our "nation" has permitted to take place over the last four years. This letter is not a pity party or an attempt to absolve myself of my own culpability or even to place the blame on someone else. I simply ask that each and every person that is (physically and financially) able to go see the film while it is in theaters to do so without delay. Obviously, there are a fair number of you that need no prompting, so take this plea as an affirmation of the film's worth. But for those of you that do not want to see the film or do not have time for a movie, it is of the utmost importance that you find a way to get out and do it. After all, it may not be an easy film to stomach (the truth� never is), but it is much more comfortable than having your limbs blown off or your face covered in napalm, courtesy of the United States of America. Please. It is truly the least you can do.
