The date represents how far into the new year a woman, on average, has to work to be paid what a man made the previous year for the same work. Equal Pay Day was created 20 years ago to bring public awareness to the fact that women earn less money than men for doing comparable work or even the same work. Recent studies show that when women enter fields that are dominated by men, wages fall for men working in that field. The reason, according to a release from an AAUW organizer, is that work done by women simply is not valued as highly, including in the female-dominated fields of childcare, eldercare, teaching and social work. Jobs that require a similar education or responsibility but differ by gender include information technology managers (mostly men), who earn 27 percent more than human resource managers (mostly women) according to Bureau of Labor Statistics data. Janitors (usually men) earn 22 percent more than maids and housecleaners (usually women). The public is invited to join AAUW and other groups on the Plaza to stand for equal pay for women.
