--> --> Leave nature in its natural place At North Mountain Park Sunday, I saw a woman catching water bugs with a net. "It's for the [park's] live exhibit," she told me. "We'll have tadpoles, too." As I watched the bug struggle in vain to climb out of the woman's bucket, I asked, "If a Martian came to Earth, would you want him to collect you in a net for an exhibit?" She told me that the park is educating people to respect nature. "I admire your intentions," I answered. "But I think this teaches children (and adults) that it's okay to snatch wildlife out of their habitats for our own use. An even deeper respect for wild animals is to "do unto others as you would have them do unto you." If the park wants to teach people to respect wildlife, it should set an example by leaving the park wildlife alone. Park staff can show nature films, if they want children to see wild animals close up. In this age when so many people are raping the environment, the most precious thing the park can teach Ashlanders is to leave wildlife alone. Park staff, your heart is in the right place. But please, don't end up setting an example yourself that will teach others disrespect, rather than respect, for nature. Ambuja Rosen Ashland Email your...
