- Subscribe - Contact Us - Rate Card - Place an Ad Archives Revels Classifieds Real Estate Menu Guide Wedding Weather Subscribe Contact Us August 24, 2005 History can’t be tested or proven In the beginning (no pun intended) of the guest forum by Kirk Evenson (Aug 18) Mr. Evenson, referring to an article by Mike Green, states the following: “So let me start by summarizing his main points: Evolutionary biology is a blatant lie used by secularists and atheists to push religious faith out of our schools in an effort to turn our children into atheists and create a socialist society in which the government is looked at as being supreme.” A careful reading of Mike Green’s column will show that he not only did not say anything like that but that he didn’t even imply such a charge. With regard to Evenson’s comment about not being able to conduct a scientific test as to whether or not God exists, he failed to mention that there is also no scientific test to prove that our ancestors were some other species. In fact, in his own letter he mentions as one of Darwin’s four subtheories the following: “Species might have common ancestors.” After all these years of scientific study of Darwin’s theory, the word “might” still applies. I don’t know why people like Mr. Evenson gets so riled up about simply letting our children know that science has still not been able to prove how life originated. Bob Clark Ashland Good parenting key for success I agree with everything Mr. Green said (Aug. 14 Web column, “40 Years of Declining Education”), although I found it surprising that he left out one major element that most educators believe is critical to the success of a student. The elements Mr. Green noted were proper curricula, textbooks, concerned teachers and a personal determination by the student to learn and overcome adversity — but then left out the fact that he succeeded in overcoming adversity because he had a strong parent, his mother, looking out for him. Without strong parenting, most students — whether white or black, rich or poor — get lost in the shuffle and fail to succeed in school. Kirk Evenson Sioux Falls, S.D. Bush takes undue liberties Time magazine: “For months after Bush gave Rice her new job, he mocked her relentlessly, addressing her as ‘Madame Secretary’ whenever she entered the room.” It goes on to say “he likes to rib her, which is a sign of his affection.” Hardly! This man is a bully. Scorn is often expressed by sham deference. His nicknames for reporters are attempts to cut them down to his size, belittle them. All this aside, his calling Cindy Sheehan “Mom,” the mother camped outside his ranch, is beyond the pale, demeaning her role of mother to her son Casey, who was killed in Iraq. He disrespects a fine relationshiip with his unbidden familiarity. At the least it is rudely discourteous and hardly befitting a POTUS, but apt for one who “flips the bird” at a reporter as he did recently. Maxine Scott Ashland Americans at risk for mad cow On Aug. 15 the U.S. Department of Agriculture acknowledged more than a thousand violations of mad cow disease regulations by U.S. meat plants since January 2004. Mad cow disease, also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), is a degeneration of brain tissue leading to erratic behavior and death. It is transmitted through feeding of infected brain and spinal tissues to other cows. Human consumption of infected beef leads to Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD), a deadly dementia frequently confused with Alzheimer’s disease that affects millions. Federal safety measures, including the 1997 ban on feeding potentially infected cow body parts to other cows, have lacked adequate enforcement. Through its reluctance to institute an adequate testing program for diseased cattle, the USDA has failed to assess the true magnitude of the threat. The latest disclosure further undermines consumer confidence in the safety of our nation’s meat supply. It provides one more reason to replace beef in our diet with a veggie burger or one of the other meat alternatives in the frozen food section of our neighborhood supermarket. Hers is the message of truth; he cannot hide from it, and he is shaking in his cowboy boots! I especially want to thank you for clearly labeling it as a conservative column. We certainly wouldn't want any liberals to read it without knowing that fact ahead of time. I guess this means that from now on, all of your other columnists will be clearly labeled as liberals. That would certainly be refreshing.
