He will “stay the course.” He is unflinchingly convinced of his path. He again stated recently, “I am not giving up the mission (in Iraq).” What if, just what if, the continued violence in Iraq is occurring simply because we are still in Iraq? What if the actual success of “our mission in Iraq” is primarily contingent upon us leaving? Now. Don Rumsfeld stated recently that the situation in Iraq could be a protracted occupation of six, eight, or even 10 years. At least. What an absolutely immense waste of lives and money! The solution is to leave Iraq now. Craig Mather Ashland Supplements can improve health As one of the many Americans who use dietary supplements to benefit their health, I am dismayed when I see good news about these products minimized or ignored in the news media. That’s why I’m calling your attention to a new study that links dietary supplements to improved health and health care savings. The study, conducted by the Lewin Group, shows that daily use of calcium would prevent 734,000 hip fractures and save $13.9 billion in health care costs over the next five years. Daily use of folic acid by women would prevent 600 cases of neural tube birth defects yearly, saving $1.3 billion in lifetime medical costs over five years. That's a total savings of over $15 billion if these simple healthy tips can be implemented. You can read more about these supplements and the other three that were studied — omega-3 fatty acids, glucosamine and saw palmetto — at www.supplementinfo.org. For a number of reasons, there’s a health care crisis in this country today that needs a solution. I urge you not to ignore information like this study that clearly shows how dietary supplements can play a big role in solving that crisis. Cathleen Wolff Medford Bianca is a team player, leader Ashland Police Chief Mike Bianca was one of the team managers when I was president of Ashland Little League. I got a chance to see how he relates to people (children and adults), and in my experience, he was always fair and understanding. In his capacity as a Little League manager, Chief Bianca impressed me greatly. Bonnie Brodersen Ashland In-absentia vote for Chief Bianca In recent days several Ashland friends have contacted us regarding the current controversy surrounding Chief Mike Bianca. As an Ashland native and resident of more than 50 years, I feel compelled to offer words of praise and support for this man. We left Ashland four years ago, but my memories of his personal integrity and compassion are as clear as flashes of lightning in a dark thunderstorm. Mike Bianca is a genuinely decent human being who also embodies a moral order that puts the immediate needs of those seeking help above bureaucracy and the strictest and most absolute interpretations of laws that can't always apply to every human situation. My memories of him include those of watching from a distance as he calmly and professionally quelled a dispute between rowdy, skateboard-wielding denizens of the Plaza and taking the time to explain the “why” of the new seatbelt law rather than just writing someone up. Most vividly, I recall the dark, rainy night in late October 10 years ago when he came up to the watershed as his shift was ending and spent close to two hours helping me search for and find my lost dogs. Thinking about these memories and the many positive, heart-warming Mike Bianca stories that are circulating now through phone calls and e-mails makes us wonder what kind of community would give even a moment's consideration to letting a man like this go. We would hope that someone would count our names, in absentia, among the many who remember and honor his work and his character. Also, we want him to know that there is a sleepy little historic village here on the banks of the Hudson River that would deeply appreciate his quality of law enforcement if he ever decides to move.
