Ashland High debate first in Oregon again Ashland Daily Tidings It's getting to be old hat for the Ashland High School Speech and Debate Team. The squad, which travelled to Cuba in January in the first-ever cross-cultural debates with Cuban students, successfully defended its state 4A speech title Saturday at Linfield College. AHS scored 103 points in the three-day event to capture its ninth title in 11 years. The second-place team, Barlow High School, scored 77 points. Ashland speech and debate coach John Tredway said the victory, despite the apparent gap in points between Ashland and Barlow, didn't come easy. "We didn't move ahead of the other teams until the third day of the tournament when an incredible 13 out of 14 individual event semifinalists went to the finals," he said. "It was a momentum surge, and we could feel the positive shift for our team." Tredway credits community support and the team's dedication for the victory. "We work harder than other teams," he said. "That's the bottom line." He also pointed out the team's level of sacrifice. "Jonah Keough won a spot at district (state qualifying) ahead of Poppy Alexander, who was the first alternate in Lincoln Douglas debate," Tredway said. "Jonah gave up his spot because he felt Poppy could win at state. This is an example of how teamwork can inspire individuals to do their best, whether it is in competition or being part of a group effort. Alexander went on to win first place in debate. Ashland also won two other events. Katie Osvold won for expository speaking and Caitlin Donovan and Amy Heidrick placed first in dual interpretation. Debaters in other categories also added precious points to Ashland's team total: Donovan placed third in memorized serious interpretation; Andy Howe was fourth in memorized humorous interpretation; Jordan Rose-Merkle was third in memorized humorous interpretation; Skye Mathieson took third in poetry reading; Jackson Myers tied for fourth in prose reading; Tara Anderson tied for fourth in original oratory; Heidrick, tied for fourth in original oratory; Rex Reichenshammer, tied for fourth in after-dinner speaking; Rose-Merkle and Natalie Glucklic took fourth in dual interpretation; Howe and Reichenshammer were third in dual interpretation; Nick Hershamm and Mathieson tied for fourth in policy debate; Paul Bingham and Jordan Willing tied for fourth in policy debate; Will Hensick was a finalist in Student Çongress; Elyse Tishkoff was a semifinalist in prose reading; and Tara Anderson took fifth in Lincoln Douglas value debate. Twenty-three AHS students qualified for state this year.
