Kapular at Nuwandart By James Reese Special to the Tidings After painting more than half his life, Alan Kapuler, 60, of Corvallis will have his first art show, April 6 in Ashland, dedicated to a friend who passed away recently, and to communal families, past and present. The show opens during Ashland's First Friday art walk, beginning 5 p.m. April 6 at Nuwandart, 258 A St., Suite 2, in Ashland. Kapuler and Jonathan Aaron and Jochen Ziems, co-owners of Nuwandart, looked together through stacks and stacks - hundreds of paintings - at Kapuler's Corvallis home. After selecting the show's 33 paintings, signing and titling many of them, then getting assistance with a hair dryer to dry the painted signatures, he showed his two greenhouses and large cache of his other works - organic seeds. Kapuler studied biology at Yale (where he graduated summa cum laude at age 19) and received a Ph.D. in molecular biology from Rockefeller University. Kapuler said he has not signed his artwork in 26 years. But he signs them now, because he realizes the value it could carry in the future. Lately he has seen his future, with his wife and two teenage daughters, tested by his fight with lymphoma. He said the show is also dedicated to the "LASER Family," short for the Latin American Study of Esoteric Religions. Specifically, he said it was a communal family he lived with in Applegate, in Jackson County. He began painting to chronicle the hippie era that he lived through. "As a biologist, I was always looking at species and organisms of living creatures on the world. So, intrinsically, it said, as an organism, you are a human body, you represent all the human beings of the world. And you want some major changes because you thought you were going to become one thing or be one thing - a scientist. And you ended up being a dirt farmer, working and collecting seeds. The paintings reflect that background of striving for change and getting into god-consciousness." But as a biologist and organic seed researcher, for Seeds of Change, and Peace Seeds, which he founded in 1975, the environment appears to be among his strongest motivators.
