OSW offers window into 'stagecraft' Southern Oregon's newest theatre company, Oregon Stage Works, will inaugurate its 2003 season with the first in a series of stagecraft demonstration/performances from the workshop, "Craft of the Actor" at 7 p.m., Thursday, January 16 in the historic Elfinwood Room of the Ashland Springs Hotel. The series will run at 7 p.m. on Thursday and Saturday evenings and at 2 p.m. Sunday afternoons from January 16 through 26. The space is newly redesigned by OSF Scenery Design Assistant Jay Fenton. In an interesting twist, Angus Bowmer, founder of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, directed his company in the same venue when the hotel was known as the Mark Anthony. According to Producing Artistic Director Peter Alzado, the Craft of the Actor classes, with audience participation, were also held last year. "When we did this last year, the audience really enjoyed it. They have the opportunity to participate in the development of these students. They come and watch the students working and get an understanding of what an actor does." During the six sessions, nine adult students will be involved. They include Jeffrey Barry, Cheryl French, Brian Wallace, Mary Rexford, Ernie Griswold, Robert Hight, Catherine Salas, Joel Handley, Nancy Zufich and Don Matthews. They'll work on four one act plays, including "Lady of Larkspur Lotion" and "Auto-Da-Fe," by Tennessee Williams; "The Way to Miami," by Donald Steele and "Penguin Blues," by Ethan Phillips. There will also be an original work, "Astonish Me," by Catherine Salas, a monologue from "Orpheus Descending"and a poem by e.e. cummings. Suggested donation for each of the events is $10. For ticket information, call 482-2334. Oregon Stage Works' 2003 season will begin with a play reading of "Gentle People," an American morality tale written just before World War II by Irwin Shaw. "Gentle People" will run on February 7, 8 and 9 and will be directed by Don Dolan. The first full production of the 2003 season will open on Tuesday, February 14, with Lanford Wilson's Pulitzer Prize winning comedy, "Talley's Folly," a romantic play featuring Alzado and Kate Sullivan.
