WEATHER OR NOT A look back at so-called 'winter' Comment By Doyle Hirsch DailyTidings.com By Doyle Hirsch Posted Apr. 8, 2015 at 8:31 PM By Doyle Hirsch Posted Apr. 8, 2015 at 8:31 PM » Social News Like the other seasons, there are really two winters: one, which goes from the winter solstice to the spring equinox and is based on old pagan holidays and is called astronomical winter, and another, which comprises the months of December, January and February and is meteorological winter and is based on the actual weather data. The coldest temperatures I've recorded in the 30 years at this location have occurred before the so-called official start of winter. Ashland's all time record low of -4° was set Dec. 9, 1972.  But "cold" wouldn't be my choice of a word for this winter. More like "mild." Medford set a record for warmest winter by a full degree. That may not sound like much, but a good analogy would be breaking the 400-meter sprint record by a full second when new records are usually a few hundreths of a second different. There's no reason to think Ashland was any different. Also, for the second year in a row, I recorded no measurable snow. I don't recall any snow falling, whether it stuck or not. It was also relatively wet with two above normal months, December and February, sandwiching a dry month, January (the driest winter month over the last 10 years). Total winter precipitation was about 30 percent above normal. The following are some stats from this winter you may find interesting (or not). Averages are over the last 10 years at an altitude of 2,080 ft. in East Ashland. As usual, your data may vary significantly: Warmest temp: 70°, Feb. 16. Coldest temp: 21°, Dec. 30. Average December hi/lo temps: 44/31. Average this winter: 51/41. Average January temp: 45/32. Average this winter: 51/36. Average February temps: 49/35. Average this year: 57/38. Number of days with high ≤32°: Zero. Number of days with any temp ≤ 32 — 16 out of a total of 90 days. Average winter precip: 9.54. Average this year:12.53 (about 31percent above normal). Wettest month: February (6.91"). Driest month: January 1.31". Greatest single day rainfall: Feb. 6 (3.26").  Highest wind gust: Dec. 11 - 66 mph.  Average snowfall: 5-6 inches. This winter: Zero.
