The blue-chip recruit is Trevor Lofstedt, a two-time Class 4A state champion from Roseburg High School who compiled a 148-12 career record for the Indians, including a 77-2 mark as a junior and senior. The prospective 125-pound collegiate competitor won state championships at 112 pounds as a sophomore and junior and finished third at 119 last February. The aspiring journalist was taken down only once as a senior (in a last-second loss in the state quarterfinals), and he placed in the top-six at the state meet all four varsity seasons. “Trevor is one of the top recruits in Oregon this year and is a great addition to our program,” Ritchey said. “He has a great chance to make an impact right away. He is solid fundamentally and is known for his dominance in the top position and his ability to pin opponents.” Lofstedt visited several NCAA Div. I programs, including Oregon State and Cal Poly, before selecting Southern. “SOU was the right fit for me both academically and athletically,” Lofstedt said. “I’m looking forward to the transition from high school to college. Being competitive at the national level will require a lot more hard work.” Lofstedt has a rich Raider wrestling bloodline. His father, Brent, was a two-time 134-pound national champion at SOU and helped the 1983 Raider team win the NAIA title. He was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1991. “(Trevor) is a much better wrestler than I was at this age,” Brent Lofstedt said. “He’s an awesome kid, and it will be great to be able to watch him compete (at SOU). I don’t think there’s a better college wrestling program in the state in terms of quality, location and academics.” The younger Lofstedt is not fazed by his father’s sizeable Raider footsteps. “My dad has always been an inspiration to me,” Trevor said, “and I’ve always strived to surpass his accomplishments.” In addition to his lofty state meet accomplishments and gaudy season records, Lofstedt won Reeser and North Bend Classic tournaments last season and finished as a scholar-athlete honoree. “A lot of people in Raider wrestling circles are excited about having a Lofstedt in McNeal Pavilion again,” Ritchey said. “He’ll have some tough workout partners who will help him develop.” Southern Oregon is coming off its 35th consecutive winning dual meet season and the program returns 17 letterwinners for 2005-06.
