AHS tennis teams beat Panthers MEDFORD - Ashland's Nick Spurlock and Shane Lloyd survived lengthy singles matches as the Grizzlies slipped past South Medford, 6-3, in a Southern Oregon Conference match at the Rogue Valley Swim and Tennis Club. Spurlock defeated Sean Rotbart, 8-6, in pro-set scoring and Lloyd needed a 7-2 tiebreaker to snap an 8-all tie and defeat Peter White-Hoppe. Ashland (4-0, 2-0 SOC) took three of the four doubles matches, dropping the Panthers to 3-3 overall. Girls Tennis Ashland didn't lose a set en route to a 9-0 Southern Oregon Conference beating of South Medford, Thursday at Hunter Park. Ashland High No. 2 singles player Jessica Baker unleashes a backhand toward South Medford High opponent Nichole Hoyle, Thursday at Hunter Park. Baker went on to win the match, 6-0, 6-1, helping the Grizzlies secure a dominating 9-0 team win. The Grizz girls (2-0) next take on Roseburg, 4 p.m. Tuesday at Hunter Park. Ashland Daily Tidings/CHRIS MILLER The Grizzlies, who improved to 2-0, thoroughly dominated singles play, giving up just six games en route to five one-sided victories. South Medford (1-3 overall, 0-2 SOC) singles players couldn't scored more than a game in any set against the Grizzlies. The closest match of the day was at No. 1 doubles, where Ashland's top duo of Sarah Cate and Samantha Holtey held off a comeback by South's Emma Close and Kelly Rulon, 6-0, 7-5. Boys Golf At Eagle Point, the Ashland High boys golf team took seventh at the nine-team Eagle Point Invitational on Thursday at Eagle Point Golf Course. South Medford won the meet with a team score of 316 and Grants Pass was second with a 358. The Grizzlies finished the course in a combined 399 strokes. Bob Tucker led Ashland by shooting a 92, one shot better than teammate Jeff Skinner. Also for the Grizz, Kit Seulean shot a 106 and William Murphy shot a 108. Softball At Eagle Point, the Phoenix High softball team isn't one that needs a lot of help, but Eagle Point obliged anyway in a 19-10, non-conference loss to the eighth-ranked Pirates on Thursday. The Class 4A Eagles committed eight errors, four in a five-run first inning for Phoenix (6-2), in continuing their recent defensive woes. Tiffany Ross sparked a 10-run second inning for Phoenix with a three-run double. The Phoenix senior finished with three hits and five RBIs, while teammate Jennifer Dunlap also added three hits and Kelsey Russell had a two-run double in the fourth. Eagle Point (3-3-1) did manage a comeback with a nine-run third inning as the Eagles took advantage of five walks and one hit batter.
