After all, we live in a democratic society in which a levy of this kind without the consent of the people seems to me to be unjust and unlawful. I am withholding payment of this fee. Ralph Neuman Ashland Marriage is about commitment Thank you for your thoughtful commentary, “An appeal to fair play,” on Oct. 3. More people need to speak out against the discrimination suffered by our homosexual population. It is difficult to understand why anyone would dishonor another individual for having been born with a sexual orientation different from their own. We have no right to deny them the same rights as those enjoyed by other members of the society. I especially appreciate your statement that marriage is “about commitment, love and sharing,” not about sexual preference. I will add my voice to those opposing Amendment 36. It should be ruled unconstitutional, making marriage possible for all committed couples. Mildred Buck Ashland Don’t cuff police’s hands We are strongly opposed to the proposed Ordinance on Community Policing for the following reasons: 1. Police are, and should be, authority figures; this perception is necessary for officers to safely and effectively do their jobs. 2. The primary job of a police force is to enforce the law, which is why such bodies are known as police forces. It is not the job of police officers to negotiate with, befriend or pamper offenders. 3. When I summon an officer in an emergency situation, I expect an officer ready to enforce the law, and not a counselor or mediator. 4. The ordinance attempts to establish, legislate and control thought. 5. The ordinance attempts to establish, legislate and control friendship. 6. In recent years the city has presented a tolerant countenance to such activities as panhandling, minor drug offenses, and even traffic infractions. Downtown businesses, as well as residents, now suffer the results. We want to reverse this trend, facilitating a safe and law-abiding city of which we can be proud. Please refute this ordinance and return our police force to the proven enforcement model which so well serves the vast majority of similar cities. Don & Laurie Skillman Ashland Gouging for boondoggle Well, I too am irate that the city council is gouging the electric customers to pay for their boondoggle. I will speak with my wallet. I have AFN Internet at my business and Charter Internet at home (AFN wasn’t available at the time I ordered), but I will be canceling Business AFN and signing on with the competition. May I suggest that others consider the same? George Pearson Ashland Animal Relief Day a success Congratulations to the many veterinary clinics and their patrons in the Rogue Valley who participated, donating time and funds on Sept. 30. Over $3,000 was raised through their efforts on Hurricaine Katrina Animal Relief Day. All of the printing and materials for the event were also donated. Despite her reluctance to be acknowledged, Jana Toney is to be commended for the initial inspiration and then the development of this event. Almost every clinic in our valley was involved. Each clinic selected a beneficiary such as the ASPCA or Noah’s Wish. In this way, a number of organizations benefited from this very special day’s work. Lin Robbins Talent Surcharge point of clarification Thanks for the coverage of the AFN situation here in Ashland. I would like to clarify a point made in a recent article (“Surcharge Is Mandatory for Residents,” Oct. 5). The story reported that those who don’t pay the monthly $7.50 AFN fee “will eventually have their electricity cut off.” The key word is “eventually.” Those wishing to make a symbolic protest concerning the way the city is handling this may choose to defer payment of the $7.50 on the first bill, the second or even the third bill. But if and only if they become $25 in arrears will their electricity be turned off. Not until then. Call the city’s electric department and they will tell you the same. Let your voices be heard.
