Her only crime was refusing to reveal a source. Our courts have deemed it just that a woman of proven excellence in her field, who contributes to society through her work, her taxes and her citizenship, should be locked up behind bars. With prisons so overcrowded that repeated felons can circle in and out of prison cells like shoppers in turnstiles at a blue-light special, the government believes it a good choice to waste yet another space on Miller. This is justice, we are told. But no matter how it is spun, the absurdity of this is apparent to all and the black stain it has caused will never be erased. The New York Times editorial from Thursday stated: “Some people — including, sadly, some of our colleagues in the news media — have mistakenly assumed that a reporter and a news organization place themselves above the law by rejecting a court order to testify. Nothing could be further from the truth. When another Times reporter, M.A. Farber, went to jail in 1978 rather than release his confidential notes, he declared, ‘I have no such right and I seek none.’” Injustice cannot be allowed to stand, even if the judges are the ones who caused it. Again, the Times well states, “She is surrendering her liberty in defense of a greater liberty, granted to a free press by the founding fathers so journalists can work on behalf of the public without fear of regulation or retaliation from any branch of government.” Our press must remain free or we all lose a great measure of personal freedom. Don’t be silent until Judith Miller is released.
