--> --> Denny's: our new symbol? How sad. Ashland is turning into a small core town, with bigger and bigger developments all around it. This project sounds like it has a "theme park" flavor, with the train and such. I don't like to pretend that change is not necessary and inevitable, but does it have to be so mindless and tacky? I suppose there will be little postage stamp green spaces, which seems to have become the Ashland standard in new developments. Each of the developers of these new areas promises great public open space or access, which then seems to become mysteriously lost in miserable planning. For instance, the development at the upper end of Granite near the reservoir, where there was supposed to be public access to the TID trail. OOPS! The developers somehow lost track of this promise, built homes so close together at the access point that it made no sense, and then played dumb (and dumber). Now there is no access to the trail at that end, due to the contentiousness that arose out of this deviousness. The other new development on Granite, in the old quarry, also used to boast a public access, but that has somehow vanished also, replaced with a no trespassing sign and chain across the road. What's up here? And where is the city's responsibility in keeping these people to their word? I don't want another huge development that makes promises that the city will not enforce. But then, I guess a town that let in the hideous new Denny's, so that we could be more and more like "anywhere America," is not too picky. Vanessa Scott Ashland Email your...
