The grounds maintenance for Lincoln and Briscoe schools, the potential sale of the Waterline property and the status of the lease of Lincoln are all set to be discussed. Board members Amy Patton and Ruth Alexander will be sworn in and join veteran Heidi Parker, re-elected Amy Amrhein and freshman board member Mat Marr, who was sworn in at the body’s June meeting. The meeting agenda includes discussion on a revision to the school district’s no-flier policy, which bars all groups from distributing information in classrooms about extra-curricular activities not sponsored by the district, and reports about the Bond and Facilities Planning Committee, the youth activities levy budget and the Sodexho food service program. The board will elect a chair and vice chair and assign adjunct responsibilities to the five members, but will not spend time setting board goals or a direction for the organization. Board members are attending a school board directors’ conference together in the Portland area this weekend and most agree the future of Lincoln School, which closed in June, is a priority. “Certainly one of the big issues in front of is how to find someone to lease Lincoln,” Amrhein said. The prior board considered hiring a property management company to handle the use proposals and oversee any tenants who may occupy the building. However, the old board deferred any decision on the future of Lincoln, the use of the Waterline property and who will be responsible for the maintenance of the playgrounds and open spaces at the two closed schools to the new board. “I think one of our most important goals should really be to think carefully about things and plan for the long term so decisions can be made deliberately, rationally and in the light of day,” Marr said. Marr echoed sentiments of several board members to make the board’s processes transparent and involve more public input. “It’s really important that the school board collaborates with other governing bodies, as well as the residents,” Parker said. “I see this as a really crucial time to reach out to the community.” Staff writer Jennifer Squires can be reached at 482-3456 x 3019 or [email protected].
