We hope that voters will look the elephant directly in the eye and ask the following question: Four more years to do what? o To continue the Bush Doctrine of preemption, leaving long-standing allies behind, as if America can act unilaterally with impunity? o To make permanent billions in tax cuts that benefit, unabashedly, those families who are the wealthiest while income for the rest has declined? o To watch another 4.3 million Americans slip below the poverty line? o To hand the Republican Party back to those stealth Republicans who were never stage center at the convention but who wield the power and set the acrimonious tone, such as Tom Delay, et al.? o To lobby vigorously to amend the Constitution and thereby deprive gay Americans the right to marry? o To deny that the most egregious intelligence failures in our nation's history - Sept. 11 and the failure to find weapons of mass destruction in Iraq - occurred on the Republicans' watch, only to turn to the American people and insist that this administration can make them safe? o To continue to underfund the much touted No Child Left Behind Act until every state and every school district across the nation faces all but certain failure. And then, what? Declare the public school system unable to educate our children and look to the private sector? o To seriously lobby for the privatization of the Social Security Trust Fund while ignoring the trillion dollar hole that policy will create? o To change the composition of the Supreme Court, paving the way for overturning Roe v Wade, not to mention perhaps roll back critical rights granted to people of color, people accused of a crime and perhaps even? o To ignore the staggering costs of health care and the fact that some 45 million Americans face each day without health insurance of any kind? o To continue to watch as our bravest and our finest young people come home in flag draped coffins, or are flown home gravely wounded, some beyond repair, to face lives that will be altered forever? All the while insisting that we must "stay the course." And what course would that be? o To strengthen and entrench the Patriot Act, while insisting that civil liberties have not been eroded and that habeas corpus is alive and well in our system of jurisprudence? President Bush said he would bring compassion, honesty and integrity to the White House. He promised to unify the deep divisions. By any standard he has utterly failed. President John Kerry will give us new hope in a different future whereas four more years will be far too painfully similar to the past four. Elect John Kerry to turn this country around.   DailyTidings.com Home Page Valley&State | Backpage | O&E | Sports | Archives | Weather | Classifieds Columnists | Faith&Beliefs | Obituaries | Revels | Subscribe | Contact Us Copyright 2004 Ashland Daily Tidings and Ottaway Newspapers All Rights Reserved Click Here Site Search: .:Advertisements:.
