Moyse, the only one of five AHS player who qualified for state still alive in a championship bracket, was set to face Lincoln senior Sarah Neuman, a 6-3, 6-0 first-round victor, at 10:30 a.m. today in the round of 16. “I played pretty well,” Moyse said in a phone interview. “I’m happy with the way I played, except for my serve, but everything else was there.” A two-time Southern Oregon Conference champion, Moyse has never advanced past the second round at state. But this time she has a more favorable draw on her side after earning the tournament’s No. 5 seed. Thanks to being seeded and the resulting draw, Moyse won’t have to play another seeded player until the quarterfinals, where she will likely be matched up with the No. 2 seed, Jesuit junior Rika Mehndiratta, this afternoon. Mehndiratta slammed Sophie Larson of Sheldon 6-0, 6-0 in another first-round match. Moyse didn’t get a chance to watch Neuman in action, but is confident heading in. “I’m pretty excited because it should be a match that I should get through,” Moyse said. “I’m pumped.” Her teammates were not as successful. Samantha Laskos and Maddy Stokes lost a play-in doubles match, 6-4, 6-4, to Britnie Newman and Elisa Owen of Mountain View, and both Ashland boys who qualified, singles players Nick Spurlock and Kyle Lachmund, suffered similar fates (although Lachmund lost in the first round and will still get his shot in the 16-player consolation bracket). Spurlock, a senior, dropped his play-in match to Andrew Pritchard of Crescent Valley, 6-1, 6-0, while Lachmund, a junior, suffered a quick 6-1, 6-0 loss to No. 3 seed Austin Rifkin of West Linn. Lachmund faces Brad Henson of Rex Putnam today in the first round of the loser’s bracket. The winner will play either Ben Korteweg of Churchill or Chris McBride of Dallas in the consolation quarterfinals.
