The temple is located at 1800 East Main Street in Ashland; all are welcome to attend. Can we still stand Shylock? In an age after Auschwitz, Shakespeare's most controversial play may simply be too anti-Semitic for a humane stage. Given the grief that stains Jewish life after the concentration camps of World War II, can we still bear to see Shylock? Some theater companies refuse to produce the play; others make Shylock less a complex Jew than a simple villain. Director Trevor Nunn addresses this historical problem directly by placing the play in the late 1930s, under the approaching shadow of fascism, and shifting the plot from troubling comedy towards historical tragedy. Henry Goodman stars as Shylock. Liz Eckhart invites you to view the production and enjoy an informal lecture and discussion before and after the movie, as well as a potluck vegetarian dairy potluck dinner in the sukkah. She has been teaching World Literature and Shakespeare at SOU since 1998. Her professional presentations have focused on literary theory and the Holocaust. Sneak Preview listed her as one of the "favorite professors at SOU" for the past three years. Come enjoy a great movie, lively discussion and good food.
