It is designed by the radical right in the Republican party. Its purpose is to eliminate the filibuster as a democratic process the senate has used for more than 200 years to stop appointments by the executive branch of the government with a majority in the Senate. The filibuster is the only means by which the senate can prevent prejudicial and politically driven appointments by the president. Because President Bush is appointing to the courts judges who are far to the right of a democratic spectrum, this an imminent and serious matter. And, as serious: the passing of the “nuclear option” will destroy the Senate as a viable institution of our democracy. Kathleen Meagher Ashland Public radio needs Goodman Amy Goodman’s “Democracy Now” is by far the finest radio and television news program being broadcast in America today. Who in possession of their critical faculties would choose to watch or to listen to any other media outlet, including, all too often, much of public TV and radio? Adhering to the highest standards of journalism, the program presents in-depth reports and discussions that include disparate voices. In terms of integrity, Amy Goodman puts the rest of the media to shame. For Ron Kramer, JPR’s executive director, to issue a diktat (Tidings, 3/26) dismissing Ms. Goodman’s work as “advocacy journalism” comparable to NRA propaganda is at once false, vicious and an abdication of his duty to the public in our area. It is a public outlet and Mr. Kramer should be paying attention to what his viewers and listeners want and what free citizens need. In age when the Bush administration defends putting out its own media propaganda and when the craven mass media itself is beholden to nothing more that the bottom line, more than ever we all need independent and intelligent voices such as that of Amy Goodman. The Rogue Valley and all of America need “Democracy Now.” Gerald Cavanaugh Ashland Clarification: Hal Jamison’s letter (April 4) referred to the above by Gerald Cavenaugh, which the Tidings incorrectly believed to have run. We apologize for the confusion. Stop slaughter of baby seals Captain Watson of the ship the Farley Mowat of the organization Sea Shepherd has begun reporting to those of us who are in sympathy of the plight of the baby seals being slaughtered in Canada. The goal of the sealers is to slaughter 325,000 seals — 95 percent of them are babies less than four weeks old. Sea Shepherd is in the midst of the battle with their ship "Farley Mowat, trying to protect the seals. These killings are extremely brutal with many of the seals taking hours to die after being clubbed, some often being skinned while still alive. Please report on this slaughter. This practice must be made known and must be stopped. Sea Shepherd is requesting that all media put something in their papers to make Americans aware of the horror of these killings. Members of Sea Shepherd are documenting these activities on film and video. The Canadian Coast Guard is making it very difficult for the Sea Shepherd Group by charging through the ice with their ice breaker ship the Newfoundland Leader, and crushing seal pups in its path. It is war, the sealing vessel the Gulf Clipper attempted to ram the Farley Mowat forcing Captain Paul Watson to back down to avoid a collision. For those of you who feel compassion over these horrid brutal killings please look up [email protected] for daily updated information on the killings of baby seals going on daily, right now. Most of this killing is for the sake of vanity where the furs are used for fancy coats, collars, some dyed, all for vanities sake. How can this be considered all right? Nina Council Ashland Protests spur donations I was saddened today to see a picketer pacing the sidewalk in front of the Planned Parenthood office in Ashland. His sign proclaimed murder. I'm not going to use this space today to expound upon Planned Parenthood's necessary work in prevention of teen pregnancy, the prevention of sexually-transmitted disease, and the unbiased counseling of unmarried teenaged couples who have no business being parents. Instead, I'm writing a check as a donation to Planned Parenthood. From now on, I'll be writing one whenever the picketers show up. I'll stop, drop off the check, and reassure the picketers that they've been noticed. Who will join me?
