How surprising, well not really. Welcome to Ashland, Andrew, where now that you are here you are supposed to do your part to help make sure no one else comes here. What I continue to be amazed by is the gall of these people. Once again it is their way or the highway. Some how the magically enlightened few like Andy Kerr, Connie Battaile and noted cause celebre Eric Navickas have decided that they know what is best for all of us. Notice they did not stop at just eliminating growth in Ashland, oh no they took it much further. They are calling for the reduction of the growth of Mankind! Here's hoping they will practice what they preach and remove themselves of the horrible guilt of even being alive. In that way I am sure they will be doing the ultimate in making sure there is no growth. They will not be around to consume any resources, and (in the case of the Navickas brothers), help procreate more human beings. After all, we humans are the source of all evil and the earth would be better off without us right? Hey, Andy, Connie and Erik, does this mean that you will soon be downing a large glass of Guyana Grape Koolaid as the ultimate protest? Didn't think so. Then in that case, instead of adopting the totally ridiculous stance of no growth at all anywhere, maybe you can help do something constructively. However, I fear what you will do is the same thing you always do. Take it to court. Hold it up for years. Vandalize the project. Scream loudly in the media that you are being ignored. In the meantime, rational people will be trying to figure out ways to balance the issues and work for solutions that make sense to all. And no, no growth at all is not one of them. More people are going to come here. That's not an opinion, that's fact. What we need to be doing now is rational planning that reduces the kind of uncontrolled urban sprawl that dominates Southern California, Arizona and Central Oregon around Bend. If the antigrowth elements want to be represented great. But it is absolutely infantile to believe that you can keep all growth from happening. Greg Roberts Medford This is not just another turn for Measure 28 When Measure 28 failed, the cuts in the Oregon budget resulted in mentally ill people on the streets without medications, there were suicides. The ugly little fact is that people died. Medical care for 80,000 disabled and mentally ill was terminated. Those are the facts. If you vote against measure 30, don't think you can avoid moral responsibility for causing it to happen all over again. It's not about politics any longer. It's a stop-gap measure. Even if it passes, it won't get us back to where we were. Along with me, change your vote and this time just say "yes." Jim Sims Emigrant Lake DEQ proposal doesn't deserve consideration Let us not even allow the consideration of the DEQ to lower air quality levels here in our beautiful Rogue Valley. Remember, or ask a local, how the air used to be here in the valley. I recall horror stories from folks I worked with who had relocated to southwest Washington where I lived and worked about how terrible it was and that was 20 years ago. We are probably fortunate enough to live in a true paradise on earth here in the valley and yet the quality of our enviroment has slipped away the past 10 years I have been a resident. There are trade-offs in life. Quality or quanity? I will settle for quality. Mrs. B. J. Trefren Jacksonville Immigration plan is bad news for unemployed President Bush's immigration proposal is motivated by two obvious factors: appealing to Hispanics, and supplying agriculture, service industries, and piece work manufacturers with an underpaid labor force. Green cards will be easily available and employers can recruit in Mexico. With the high unemployment rate and approximately 350,000 individuals discouraged and no longer seeking employment the myth that Americans are not willing to take low level jobs is hardly credible.
