The lanky senior played a prominent role in both ends of a 5-3 and 8-7 doubleheader sweep against Roseburg at Legion Field. In the opener, the 6-foot-2 left-hander pitched a complete game, allowing six hits and striking out nine. Hegdahl had control of the Indian hitters in all but one inning. Hegdahl surrendered three of the hits, both his walks and all Roseburg's runs during a fourth-inning rally. Tanner Clagett provided the big hit with a two-run double. "(Hegdahl) was very effective," said Roseburg coach Troy Thompson. "He stayed ahead of our hitters and kept us off-balance." Hegdahl delivered at the plate with two hits, including an RBI double during a Grizzly four-run outburst in the sixth. Hegdahl also had a hand in Ashland's first run scored in the third inning. Jackson Rowe opened with a single, Hegdahl followed with a base hit and Brian Ross was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Rowe scored when Rocky Reeser grounded into a double play. In Game 2, it was Hegdahl's bat that sparked the Grizzlies (9-4, 5-4 SOC). Hegdahl, last year's SOC batting champion, hit an RBI double to help Ashland take a 4-0 lead in the top of the first, then smacked a two-run homer in the fifth. Ashland scored two runs in the top of the seventh to increase its margin to 8-5. After intentionally walking Hegdahl with two outs to put runners on first and second, Ross' fly ball to left fell in for a two-run double. Roseburg (5-9, 3-6 SOC) answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. The Indians had runners on second and third when Kerry Hall lined out to center to end the game. Roseburg stranded 13 runners in the second game. Next up for Ashland is another SOC clash, Tuesday at Klamath Union (4-5 SOC). Boys' Tennis The Ashland High boys' tennis team dropped a pair of three-set matches and had to settle for a 4-4 tie with visiting Shasta, Saturday at Hunter Park. The Grizzlies won three of four singles matches and the No. 1 doubles match, but Shasta left without a loss on the strength of a clutch third set by fourth-doubles team T.J. Taylor and Skye Featherson. Taylor and Featherson edged Ashland's Ian Dean and Kyle Lachmund, 6-1, 2-6, 7-6 (5). At third doubles, Shasta's Brian Schinstock and Jeff Shoffner came back from a set down to defeat Ashland's Brendan Curry and Nick Spurlock, 1-6, 6-4, 6-4. Ross Mather (No. 1), Cory Lescher (No. 2) and Jack Turner (No. 4) each gained singles victories to spearhead the Grizzlies' cause. Mather rebounded from a horrible start to topple Jeff Shoffner, 0-6, 6-4, 6-1, Lescher dominated Nick Sullens, 6-2, 6-1 and Turner overpowered Skye Featherson, 6-4, 6-1. Next up for the Grizzlies is an Southern Oregon Conference dual, Tuesday at Grants Pass. Boys' Golf At Grants Pass, Joel Salmond shot a team-best 80 to lead Ashland High to a ninth-place finish in the 10-team Southern Oregon Invitational, Saturday at Grants Pass Golf Club. Salmond shot a 36 on the front nine and a 44 on the back. Also for Ashland, Ben Wright shot an 89, Austin Harfst shot a 91 and Will Murphy shot a 100. Ashland's next meet is an all-SOC affair, April 26 at Roseburg.
