The senior left-hander smashed a three-run home run to win Game 1, in which he also picked up the pitching victory, then ripped a two-run double and made a diving catch in right field to help the Pirates (3-4, 2-1 Skyline) clinch the Skyline doubleheader sweep at Hagler-James Field. Trailing 4-3 with two on and two out in the bottom of the seventh inning of the opener, Rhodes hammered the game-winner over the right-field fence. He was 3-for-4 with five RBIs at the plate and struck out seven while allowing two earned runs on five hits and two walks on the mound. The complete-game effort marked the first start this season for Rhodes (1-0). "He had a pretty hard slider, and his fastball was pretty alive," said Phoenix head coach Joe Hagler. "And right now, he's hitting the ball real well. He hasn't had a bad game at the plate." Jeremiah Frey tripled and scored on Ryan Girodat's single to give the Chieftains (2-4, 0-3) a short-lived, 4-3 edge in the sixth inning of Game 1. Girodat also had a double, while Brenton Ferguson went 2-for-3 with two runs for the Pirates. In Game 2, Phoenix did all its scoring in the first two innings, getting an RBI single from Ken Gehrig in the first and a two-run double from Rhodes in the second. Gehrig finished 2-for-3 overall. AHS Baseball At Grants Pass, Ashland brought the heavy lumber for a non-conference game at All Sports Park, smacking seven extra-base hits in routing Grants Pass 15-5 in five innings. Chad Hegdahl connected for a home run and two doubles, going 3-for-4 with three runs and three RBIs overall. Wes Tygerson was 3-for-3 with a homer and four RBIs. Freshman Aaron San Nicolas picked up the pitching win in his varsity debut for the Grizzlies (4-3). Grants Pass fell to 3-5.
