The newspaper also earned the General Excellence honorable mention note behind The Observer (La Grande), The Dalles Chronicle and the Baker City Herald. The annual awards event, sponsored by the Oregon Newspaper Publishers Association, evaluates newspapers from across the state in 25 categories, including design, writing and photography. Competing in Division C, the category reserved for daily newspapers with circulations less than 10,000, the Daily Tidings captured five photography awards and editor Andrew Scot Bolsinger contributed to seven straight-news and opinion writing awards. “Awards are only part of our effort to be the best. A bigger part is winning the respect and trust of our readers in Ashland, Talent and Phoenix. I am even more proud of our efforts in this area,” Bolsinger said. “Last year was a great year, but I firmly believe we are doing even better work this year as we continue to strive for excellence.” The Daily Tidings earned nine ONPA awards in 2004. In 1998, the last year the newspaper won the general excellence title, the paper took home 11 individual honors. The contest considers all work done in 2004; submissions were due in April. “When I arrived here two years ago, I said publicly that I wanted the Tidings to again be recognized as the best small newspaper in the state,” Bolsinger said. “These awards certainly validate that if we are not the best, we are certainly among the very best.” Members of the Oklahoma Press Association judged the contest, which drew 2,140 entries from 59 newspapers in six divisions. Daily Tidings news editor Pete Hahnloser raked in four awards for his design skills, including first place for best graphics, second place and honorable mention for best special section or issue, and third place for best section front or inside page design. Bolsinger, city editor Myles Murphy and Amanda Bolsinger won three awards for the investigative reporting that brought to light the prevalent use of marijuana by Ashland High School students. The trio earned second place for best educational coverage and best lifestyle coverage, as well as honorable mention for best enterprise reporting. Sports editor Joe Zavala received first-place kudos for best local column and best sports page. Former Daily Tidings photographer Satsuki Doi won first and third place for best sports photo, in addition to second place for best photo essay. Photographer Denise Baratta took home first-place honors for the best photo essay and the best feature photo. Staff writer Jennifer Squires earned second place for the best “silk purse” story. “I couldn't be more proud of this newsroom staff,” Bolsinger said. “We have five or six different people win first-place awards, which speaks to the dedication and effort of the entire staff.” ONPA, founded in 1887, is a professional association of the state’s daily and non-daily paid-circulation newspapers.
