MONDAY February 23, 2004 - Subscribe - Contact Us - Rate Card Valley&State Backpage O&E Sports Archives Classifieds Faith&Beliefs Obituaries Revels December 2, 2003 Two museums teaming up to honor aviation milestone In honor of the 100th anniversary of the first powered flight of the Wright Brothers, both the Southern Oregon Historical Society and ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum in Ashland are presenting major exhibitions on flight. "Celebrating Flight: A History of Aviation in Southern Oregon" opens to the public Saturday at the History Center, 106 N. Central Ave. in Medford. "Celebrating Flight" showcases the development of aviation in this region with rare photographs, videos, oral histories of local aviators, and aviation artifacts. For the exhibit opening, the "WingZinger," a state-of-the-art paper airplane launcher, will be on loan from ScienceWorks. Other interactive and hands-on educational activities for children and adults will also be featured during the run of the exhibit into 2004. Co-sponsors of "Celebrating Flight" are Horizon Air, KOGAP Enterprises, and the Jackson County Airport Authority. The History Center is open Tuesday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., with holiday closures Dec. 24, 25 and 31, and Jan. 1. No admission is charged; a donation is requested. "Take Flight," opening Dec. 13 at ScienceWorks, focuses on the creative and experimental nature of flight with hands-on flight activities, paper airplane, helicopter and rocket launchers. Visitors are encouraged to create their own flying machines while learning about some of the principles of flight in the process. ScienceWorks Hands-On Museum, located at 1500 E. Main St. in Ashland, is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. More information is available by calling 482-6767 or visiting www.scienceworksmuseum.org. During the run of the two flight exhibits, visitors to the SOHS History Center and ScienceWorks will be encouraged to visit the other organization's exhibit, and visitors to one location may pick up a special coupon entitling them to a promotional discount being offered by the other organization. In 2004, the two organizations hope to introduce small exhibits, including historic aviation artifacts from SOHS, for example, at each site to give a taste of the other's exhibition. "We are very excited to be working with ScienceWorks. They have been doing some wonderful things for children with hands-on science exhibits and programs, and we see our work in the historical field as being very complementary. We hope to work with ScienceWorks in other ways as well," said John Enders, executive director of the Southern Oregon Historical Society. According to ScienceWorks executive director Christy Hostetler, this collaboration represents a great opportunity for learning. "We recognize that it is important to learn not only how flight works from a scientific point of view, but also how flight has been achieved through the creative efforts of our predecessors. We believe a visit to both museums will be a richer experience in understanding flight."
