Shelter for homeless people has been arranged for three nights a week starting in mid-November and continuing into April, but the One Site committee is still working on finding a solid location for the other four nights a week. To prepare for what they hope will be an expanded schedule, shelter coordinators are recruiting volunteers and planning on training hundreds of people next week. The First Presbyterian Church of Ashland has agreed to host the shelter for three nights a week. The church wi

Ashland needs Voisin The fact that Carol Voisin is running for City Council again is testament to her tenacious spirit and concern for the pressing issues facing Ashland, many of which were the same issues that concerned her when serving on the council previously: budget responsibility, water, renewable energy, affordable housing. Especially important was her advocacy for citizen input and adult behavior during a period of council incivility. Ashland needs her kind of conscientiousness again. Al

Ashland has many fine service clubs that make important contributions to other organizations and individuals in all corners of our community. These clubs include the American Association of University Women, Elks, Kiwanis, Masons, Lions, Rotary, and Soroptimist International of Ashland (SIA). The work of these clubs is based on their specific missions, but clearly many club members contribute beyond their clubs, as individuals or as part of their affiliation with other organizations. “Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead,” Tom Stoppard’s 1966 Edinburgh Fringe Festival debut, is an absurdist nightmare comedy along the lines of “Waiting for Godot.” Like Beckett, Ionesco and others, “Rosencrantz & Guildenstern” explores that narrow divide between art and reality, argues choice and predestination, and questions the meaning of life. “Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead” opened last week at Camelot Theatre. To appreciate the play, first think “Hamlet” and then turn the play inside

The events of last week have been some of the darkest in recent memory. It feels as if our nation has become unmoored, subjected to inexplicable trauma that is incomparable to anything in our history. While there is no direct evidence linking Donald Trump’s rhetoric to these recent events, it seems irrefutable, reaching back to the Trump campaign, that there has been an angry, grievance-laden, vitriolic tone to his speeches, often nurtured by his demeanor and incitements and ad hominem attacks.

Ashland School District is denying all responsibility for a 2017 fight that occurred on school grounds and gave rise to two lawsuits earlier this year. In response to lawsuits from two students involved in the fight, the high school has denied it was negligent in not preventing the fight and that it maliciously disciplined one student in the aftermath. Portland lawyer Peter Mersereau, who is representing the school district in both cases, declined to comment on pending litigation. The first laws

The public is invited to join renowned Japanese Garden designer Toru Tanaka as he guides a tour for the Ashland Parks and Recreation Commission at 1:30 p.m. Thursday in the Japanese-style garden in Lithia Park. This tour is a special APRC meeting to further discuss the remodel of the Japanese-style garden into an authentic, larger and more diverse Japanese garden. After Tanaka’s presentation last week to APRC, it was decided that an on-site visit would give the commission a better sense of the r

PITTSBURGH (AP) — They were professors and accountants, dentists and beloved doctors serving their local community. A day after the shooting at a Pittsburgh synagogue that left 11 dead, officials released the names of the victims. The oldest of them was 97. The youngest was 54. Though 82-year-old Dot Fisher-Smith spent much of her life protesting injustice, probably her most famous moment came in 1996 when she was chained by the neck to a logging truck near the Croman Mill in Ashland. She and 12 others were arrested that day for protesting one of a hundred timber sales Congress had exempted from environmental constraints and administrative challenges. A Mail Tribune photo of Fisher-Smith with a bicycle lock around her neck flashed around the world, evoking sympathy, hu

Supporting Jensen We are fortunate to have a number of excellent candidates running for positions on the Ashland City Council. For Position 6, I’m particularly pleased to support Stephen Jensen. Steve has an incredibly broad range of experiences and aptitudes qualifying him for this office. Of particular note is his participation on the Ashland Forest Lands Commission and, now as a sitting councilor, as liaison to the Wildfire Mitigation Committee. Catastrophic wildfire is truly an existential t

Veterans Administration Environmental Health Coordinator Rey Quintanilla assists injured veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange, napalm, or other toxic substances while serving in Viet Nam, Iraq or Afghanistan. Recently, in conversation with Rey, I was reminded of the multitude of chemicals which the U.S. military has used as part of its overseas operations. For readers too young (or too old) to remember, before Monsanto began manufacturing Roundup, several pharmaceutical companies, including

It was a horrible 20 minutes. On Saturday morning, Rabbi Avi Zwiebel was celebrating his usual Shabbat service at Chabad Synagogue on Siskiyou Boulevard in Ashland. As part of tradition, no one carries phones on that day. But a parishioner came in late and broke the news about an active shooter at a synagogue in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh. “I was filled with fear such as I’ve never known,” said Zwiebel, whose daughter Baila, 16, was working in a synagogue in that neighborhood.

I wouldn’t have liked to earn my living in public relations. Not that there’s anything intrinsically wrong with the occupation. Still, I think I would have foundered on moral dilemmas. For example, I wouldn’t have wanted to work on the PR campaign that Pembina, the Canadian corporation that wants to build the Jordan Cove pipeline and LNG plant, just launched to win local support. The latest mailer I received features a father and son fly fishing in the Rogue River, plus a hunti

The deadly adenovirus that has been decimating urban blacktails this summer in Southern Oregon has been discovered in forested areas, worrying biologists that it might be spreading to migratory herds.  Dead deer recently have been discovered in the Buck Prairie area off Dead Indian Memorial Road in the hills east of Ashland and high in the East Evans Creek drainage, with other reports coming from the Shale City area.  All are locales frequented highly migratory black-tailed deer h

Put gun ban on ballot OK, so we fervently did the March for Our Lives in Medford. Now here’s an opportunity to legally ban and control assault weapons in Oregon by collecting enough signatures to put this on the November ballot. Don’t just stand there, come to the training session for collecting these signatures at 5 p.m. this coming Saturday, June 23, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship at 87 Fourth St. There will be an opportunity to speak with Penny Okamoto, director of Ceasefire Oregon,
