showed that MORRIS COHEN and LONA COHEN more married
on July 13, 1941, at Norwich, Conn. Said information

The most significant thingprecalled
about LONA COHEN's appearance was that she sore slacks
continuously. It will be noted each person spoken
to in connection with LONA COHEN has pointed out this
fact and it would appear tna: LONA COHN incessantly
dressed in mannish attire.!

her. She stated one of the main reasons she recalled
this couple was that LONA COHEN was a resident in the
neighborhood, who continually wore slacks. She commented
to interviewing agents that LONA was a person whoconcerning the COHENS or H57

The back of the man's photo contained the name "MORRIS"
and the back of the woman's photo contained the name "SHI
These photos were subsequently identified as MORRIS COHEN
LEONA COHEN, nee PETRA;

New fork 9-30-50. Inie date may be significant
in that their disappearance took place shortly
after the Julius Rosenberg case broke. In view
thereof, the possibility that subject and his
wife may have had some connection with the Julius
Rosenberg espionage network should be kept in
mind during this investigation. As noted in the

Uhen EMIL R. GOLDFUS, Principal of the Fincase,
was arrested on 6/2L/57 at the Latham Hotel, NYC, a package
containing $HOOO was found among his possessions. This money was
wrapped in brown wrapping paper. Under one flap of the package
was found a photo of an unknown man and woman. The back of the
man's photo contained the name "MORRIS" and the back of the
woman's photo contained the name "SHIRLEY". These photos were
subsequently identified as NORRIS COHEN and LEONA COHEN, nee
PETKA.
A review of the NYO files on MORRIS and LEONA COHEN
reflects that they both disappeared from their residence, 1Y8
E. 7151: s1:., NYC, on 9/30/50. The possibility exists that I-IORRIS
and LEONA COHEN entered the CP underground at that time and that
they have been involved as espionage agents for Russia since that
time.
' A review of the records of the NYC Board of Education
110 Livingston St., B'k1yn, NY, reveals that he was employed as a
teacher in the NYC school system from 1947 - 1950. On his application
for employment in 1947, he listed the following references:-

photograph Just barely showed. n the back of thewoman's phalléraph was the notation "How are Joann's
murders? and signed "Shirley." On the back of the
man's photograph was the notation "Have you taken aEgip §c>§risco.T since we last saw you?" and signed

to the INS Detention Facility, Mc Allen, Texas, on 5

'Th e p o ograp s were oun y investigators at
the time of his arrest on June 21, 1957, and were
signed "MORRIS" and "SHIRLEY." GOLDFUS stated thatSHIRLEY §E%¢HDRRIS were people he met in Central Park,
New York ty, about l9H9 and with whom he associated
for about four months. He said he was in their company
about twelve times during that period. He said when
the weather was good, they usually met in Central
Park, and when bad, they met in one of the museums
in New York City. He went on to say that on occasions,
he would have lunch or dinner with MORRIS and SHIRLEY
in a New York City restaurant which he did not identify.
GOLDFUS advised that MORRIS and SHIRLEY are
a married couple whose last name he could not recall
and that he believed that they live in Manhattan. He
stated that MORRIS was employed as a salesman, but he
did not recall the place of employment. He is not sure,
but he believed that SHIRLEY was unemployed.
He stated he has not seen them since l9h9.
He believed they lived in Manhattan, but does not know
their address. He stated that their conversations
concerned literature and art. He stated that the
probable reason he retained the photographs of SHIRLEY
and MORRIS was because they were the only photographs
given to him by anyone in the United States.
He stated the reference to "Joann's murders"
was reference to the fact that he likes to read detective
stories, and the reference to a trip to Frisco resulted
from his having told them he planned a trip to San
Francisco in l9H9.
