notebooks, comprising a diary maintained sporadically from 191th
to 19349, inclusive, by Attention is directed
to an entry contained on the eighth page of -the diary indicated
under the date of March 15, l9_h9, which reads as follows:

_ was questioned concerning these diary '
entries, and advised that _ during the l9l.i3 Democratic
Campaign and while on leave from the Washington, D. 0., Iolice
Department, was employed, along with his wife, at Democratic
Headquarters in Washington on a volunteer basis. He relatedhis contact with Entinued into the year 1911.9, but has
since terminated. i informed that on the approximate date
of the entry was discussing with him the fact that many
individuals oi prominence had been damaged in their reputations
through the unbased repetition of rumors, and particularly
rumors alleging homsexuality. He stated that in this conver-
sation and on this basis _told him he had heard rumors
linking the name or J. EDGAR HOOVER to this type or activity.

SAC Powers, Miami, telephoned and advised he had just

19b9, indicating that -had given some bad news concerning
the Director. Powers stated thatr- seemed to be sincere when
he vehemently denied ever having discused with any rumors
of alleged homosexuality and how such rumors damaged individualsof prominence through unbased repetition. Hsaid that he
had never heard any such rumor concerning e rector and had
such a high regard for the Bureau and the Director that he would
not have repeated such a rumor had he heard it because he knew
in his own mind that such an allegation was patently false-
told Powers he felt certain he had not talked to
at all in March of 19u9. -said um; beginning in
October, 19143, he had done volunteer work for the DemocraticNational Committee. He worked getting literature with a Q_, then secretary of the Young Democrats of America. n
December, 19hB, the National Democratic Committee needed assistance
in connection with the coming inauguration and again volunteered
his services in connection with the Truman-Barkley Clubs organization.

For inclusion in the fund to be paid to the designated beneficiary of any Special
Agent,of the FBI who has previously contributed to this fund and who dies from any cause except
self-destruction while employed as a Special Agent. I am forwarding herewith by CHECK - I'D!!!
ORDER! the sun of $10, payable to the Assistant Director, Administrative Division, FBI, to be
included in said fund. Payment will be made for death by self-destruction after the Agent has
been a nenb-er of the fl!!! for a continnou_s period of two years. It is understood and agreed
that the sum tendered herewith is a voluntary, gratuitous contribution to said fund which I
understand is to be administered in the following manner. The liability of the fund shall not
under any circumstances exceed the amount oi Ionics in the fund at the time any liability shell
occur.
The Director of the FBI will appoint a committee which shall consider all matters per-
taining to the acquisition, safe keeping and expending of said fund, which collaittee will recon-
lend appropriate action to the Director in pertinent matters. The Assistant Director of the

John Edgar Hoover was born January 1, 1895, in the District of
Columbia. He was educated in the public schools of the District of
Columbia and received LL.D. and LL.M. Degrees from George Iashington -
University. He holds Honorary Degrees from George Iashington University,
Pennsylvania Military College, New York University, Drake University, -
Ieetnineter College, Oklahoma Baptist University, Georgetown University,
Notre Dame University, St. John's-University Law School, Rutgers Uni-
versity, the University of Arkansas, Seton Hall College, Holy Cross
College and Marquette University. He holds an Honorary Degree of Doctor
of Science from Kalamazoo College and an Honorary Degree of Doctor of
Civil Laws from the University of the South.
yr. Hoover entered the Department of Justice in 1911, and in
1919, was appointed Special Assistant to the Attorney General. Fro:
1921 until 1924 he served as Assistant Director of the Bureau of n
Investigation and in May, 1924, he was named Director.
Ur. Hoover is a member of the Masonic Order; Kappa Alpha
Fraternity; Omicron Delta Kappa; Delta Theta Phi; Alpha Phi Omega, and
Zeta Sigma Pi. He is a member of many national and state-wide lav
enforcement associations. He is a trustee of the George Ihshinpton
University; a trustee of the National Presbyterian Church; a member
of the Board of Directors of the Central Dispensary and Ehergency
Hospital, Iashington, D. 0.; a nenber of the Board of Directors of the
Boys Clubs of America; a member of the National Committee an Public
Relations of the Boy Scouts of America; and an Active Member of the
Grand Council of the Order of Dsolay.
He has been admitted to practice law before the bar of the
District Court of the United States for the District of Columbia, the
United States Court of Claims, and the United States Suprele Court.
On March 8, 1946, Ir. Hoover was presented the Medal sf.lbritby the President of the United States. On October 27, 1949* he was
awarded the "Theodore Roosevelt Distinguished Service Medal by the
Roosevelt Memorial Association.

Agent of the FBI who has previously contributed to this fund and she dies free any cause
