thereto, ALLEN did not have any active part in voter
registration drives. He said he felt sure ALLEN wouldhave no time for such activities, since he made his
livelihood logging, which required him to be in thewoods from dawn to sunset. Ix5ALLEN had in any waybeen active in voter registra ion drives in AmiteCounty, he felt that he would know about it directly,and if not directly, he would have heard about it fromwhite or Negro sources in the county. ""

stated thataround 12:30 Al, February l, 1964, he was con-
tacted telephonicallyby Sheriff DANIEL JONI3, Anita County,
who_ interned his that a Negro had been shot and he wanted the
doctor to aeet his at his oitice. JONN related to his that
he thought. the Negro was dead andpdid not think there was any...
thing the doctor could do, but he desired thedoctor verity
that the Negro was dead. . .

'~ Dr. BRIDGE said he dressed immediately and went to
the sheri's oice where he set JONES. JONES at this the
told hin that the shot Negro was LOUIS ALLEN and he was at his
residence. Dr. JONES stated he leit with the sheri and
arrived at ALLEN's house around 1:25 AI ' " O. 4 =.a. ' .-
. Ilpon arriving at the entrance oi ALLEN's hone about
rive niles west oi Liberty on highway 24 I, Dr. BRIDGE stated
he observed a_ logging truck parked in the driveway leading
into the ALLEN property. The truck was Just oii the highway
and in treat or the gate which was partly open. Under the .
truck lying taco down on his stonach was a Negro sale, who herecognised as L318 ALLEN. the body was iacing the rear oithe truck and , coapletely under the truck at about the ~-center part oi thxtrnch, Just about under the cab oi the truck
. Upon observing the body, Dr. BRIDGES stated that it
was apparent isnediately to hinf that ALLEN was dead. he eaid
that he based this opinion npon the tact that he could observe
two large holes in the skull above the leit ear and lett ~ .
iorehead with a portion oi the brains exposed. One oi these"
heleswent through the Jaw. Inrther, that upon ieeling the _
body,*he noted that the chest and arm were cool, all oi whichf
established in his own nind that ALLEN was dead, since he could
not have possibly lived having such wounds. _, I .

tine oi death, but based on the above indicated coolness oi
the body, he estinated that death had occurred at least two

ALLEN was arrested by him and that at that time he wasthe Deputy Sheriff. At the time of the arrest in Liberty,hississippi, JONES found a loaded .22 caliber pistol inthe glove compartment or ALLEN's truck. As a result of
finding this pistol, JONES subsequently signed anaffidavit upon the authority of the Amite CountyDistrict Attorney charging ALIEN with carrying a concealedweapon and a warrant was issued. » " ~

Hrs. ELIZABEIB ALLEN was located and interviewed
at 10568 Bertha Street, Scotlandville, Louisiana, at which
time she furnished the following additional informationt
1 Ire. ALLEN stated that following her husband'stestitying in the HEPJBEEPI LEE matter in 1961, her husband
found it difficult to get contracts to cut timberfromwhite people. 8he stated her husband told her that before
thishe had no trouble in getting such contracts, further
that in Liberty, Iississippi, there were a number of
business establishments where he could get credit such
as grocery stores and gasoline stations when he did'not
have the ready cash. She could not furnish the identity
0!"l.ny_g8801lt!8 stations but identified one of the grocery
stores as the Fairway Grocery Store. She added, however,
that her husband still was able to obtain credit from
Blaylocks Grocery storein Liberty.
s Ilrs. ALLEN could not furnish the identity of
white persons whoiwould not sell timber to her husband. g
As a result of individuals refusing to give her
husband contracts to cut timber in the Liberty area, her
husband had been forced to go to Louisiana to cut timber
which he was able to do. She said that her husband sold
the timber that he cut to 8AM HAYBRY Lumber Company,
Liberty, although she did not know for sure, she said her
husband had indicated to her that on occasions HAYBBY
had made her husband small loans of money. -
' After her husband was released from the Anita
Gounty Jail, Liberty, Mississippi, in November, 1963,
her husband told her that he felt that. the white people
in the area were "picking on him because the white people
would not given him anymore logging contracts or give him

husband mentioned to her that he thought ht would go to
