Intelligence Activities of the United States
Governments
The white House requested a name check of Kennedy
on 2/25/55. Pursuant to the recommendation in a
memorandum oi 2/Zé/55 from Mr, Belmont to Mr, Boardman
the White House was advised by letter dated 2/28/55
that no investigation of Kennedy had been conducted
by this Bureau.
In connection with the current inquiry the White House
asked for a name check of Kennedy. By letter 2/15/56
they were referred to the previous letter of 2/28/55
and advised that no pertinent identifiable information
subsequent to the letter of 2/28/55 was contained in
the records of this Bureaus

and on July 1, 1920, was made manager of the Stock

America. In 1928 he reportedly sold his interest to the
Radio Corporation of America.

. isap Night Supervisor, Chicago Office, called at7:14 p. m. , 12/3 61, and stated that around 7:00 p. m. , Joseph P. Kennedy, the
President's father, had called the Chicago Office from the Ambassador East 1
Hotel. Mr. Kennedy, who had just checked in at the hotel room 1542!, said
he thought his room was "bugged" and he wanted the FBI to check it out. His
reason for believing it "bugged" was because five minutes after he checked in,
all kinds of people arrived at his room. '
ACTION TAKEN: _I The Chicago Oifice was instructed to complytwith Mr. Kennedy's
7/ request.
SAC James Gale advised at 11 55 p m that Mr Kenned s roomhad been thoroughl checked out by sound.trained'SA's and t no hidden microphones or other technical equipment
was located. .
' Mr. Kennedy indicated that he was quite pleased at the way his
request was handled by the Agents. He said that he intended to call Mr. Hoover _
on the morning of 12/4/61 to express his appreciation to him personally. -

personal friend of JOSEPH P. KENNEDY, former Ambassador to London,
and the latter has indicated that he would be glad to assist the
Bureau in any way possible should his services be needed. "
Hr. KENNEDY speaks very highly of the Bureau and the
Director, and has indicated that if he were ever in a position
to make any official recommendations there would be one Federal
investigative unit and that would be heeded by J.'Bdgnr Hoover.
He considers the Navel and Army Intelligence Services "ennteurs"
in comparison to the Bureau and regrets that they here often
meddled in investigations coming within the jurisdiction of the
Bureau.
However, no attempt will be nede't0 develcp Hr. Kennedy
as a Special Service contact unless the Bureau so instructs.

Joseph P. Kennedy has been designated as a Special Service Contact
since September 7, 1943. He is the former United States Ambassador to Great
Britain, from which post he resigned in November, 1940. Because of his
diplomatic background and his innumerable contacts in the international diplomatic

He is still actively engaged in'the liquor business in ew York
City and owns several moving picture houses there. He maintains close connections
financial and otherwise with the moving pictue industry in California and
has some very good connections in South America in this industry. In the
moving picture industry he has many Jewish friends who be believes would
furnish him, upon request, with any information in their possession pertain-
ing to Comnist infiltration into the industry. He feels that he is in a
position to secure any information the Bureau may desire from his contacts
in the industry with reference to any individuals who have Communistic
sympathies. '
In a letter dated December 27, 1945, the Boston Office advised
that the Resident Agent in Hyannis, Massachusetts, had had many productive
investigative and social contacts with Mr. Kennedy,

' At this time, Miss Eunice~Rennedy, who is presently employed by the
Department of Justice as Executive Assistant to the Attorney General in charge i
.-K of juvenile matters, interrupted to state that recently her father, Joseph
Kennedy, had met with the Director and that he was very much impressed by the92 Director. She went on to considerable length -to state that her father had
indicated that the efficiency oi the Bureau had always inpressed him, that he
was very much impressed with the administrative organization and the operation
of the Bureau. Apparently, Mr. Kennedy was granted an interview by the Director' and had spoken quite loudly in praise of him to Miss Kennedy and his son, who

investment business or in financial endeavors since 1919.
He was appointed to the Securities and Ebzchazge Gem-.ission
in 19314. He resigned in 1935. He was Chairman of the U. .8. Maritime
Commission in 1937 and was Ambassador to Great Britain it-om 1937 to
19111. He resigned in Kovember, 19140. He has a Papal decoration, is
trustee of Notre Dame University, is a Catholic and a democrat. His
- hone is North if-oe-an Boulevard, Palm Beach, Florida.
/ix'Ihere is scant information in the Bureau files on Kennedy.
His son, Joseph, Jr. , a. veteran, is a member of Congress from liassachusetts.
Both oi Kennedy's sons had good U8-I records but he, himself, although
variously mentioned for important war jobs, seems to have been relatively
inactive. Since the conclusion oi the war, he apparently has devoted
himself to business.

received very cordial treatment from Ambassador Kennedy in London, while.was there -visiting Scotland Yard.
Kennedy's Ambassadorship to Britain -is widely regarded in the
United States as demonstrating that Keunedv was an eppeaser and believed -
that Britain would lose the war. His appeasement during this period is
thought to be important only as it throws light on his present views about
Russia as reported by I-fr. Arthur Krock. i
Arthur Krock, 01 the New York Times, writing from Florida
described Kennedy as spokesman for a group oi industrialists and financiers,
who believe that Russia should not be opposed at any point. All American
energies should be devoted to keeping America prosperous. Thus, when

at the Chiefs of Police meeting in Hyannis. He pointed_
out it was hard to get men in public life because of unjust
criticism; that when the Bureau and the Director were
