b   InvestigationU determined that on 4/l7/74, a Hammond Company, San Antonio,
Texas, salesman&#39;s hotel room in Dallas, Texas, was
burglarized of a quantity of an undetermined amount of
jewelry. Portions of this jewelry would bear trade name
"Pri with

e hotel room of the entertainer LEE LIBERACE was
burglarized of jewelry amounting to $24,055, including
a Tiffany platinum pocket watch encrusted with diamonds.
USA&#39;s Strike Force, NDI, Chicago, Illinois, contactedand furnished above information. An affidavit in support
of n Title III application was forwarded to the Department
of Justice on 3/Z0/74, on 4/2/74, the A torney General
authorized the implementation of the Tit II application
concerning the Universal Gem and Jewelry Company, Chicago,Illinois, and the U.S. District Judge, EDI, Chicago,
Illinois, issued the court order for this implementation
on 4/3/74. Chicago Office was partially operational as
of 4/4/74, but not fully operational until evening of
4/5/74. On 4/l7/74 n conver

warrant and complaint were filed before the U.S. Magistrate,
Chicago, Illinois, Ior a search of LEWIN&#39;s premises at
5 North Wabash and Icr the arrest of IEWIN for violation
of Title 18, Section 2315, U36. The&#39;scnrch and arrest
warrants were executed on the evening of 4/l7/7%, at
L£WIN&#39;s place of business. The resulting search located
the platinum pocket vntch with the letter "L" encrusted
with and surrounded by diamonds, as well ns numerous
trays of rings believed identifiable with the instant

copy of the inventory of the merchandise removed from
his premises.
On April 17, 1974, while on the premises
of the Universal Gem and Jewelry Company, Incorporated,
5 North Wabash Avenue, Chicago, 11linoi* and during thesearch of these premises SA  located
in the shirt pocket of ADQLPH LEWIN an envelope
containing a Tiffany and Company pocket watch encrusted
with jewels on the back of which was the script
letter "L" which was also encrusted and surrounded
by whet appeared to be diamonds. At that time ADOLFH
LEWIH was furnished a receipt for this pocket watchby  bqg,
On April 17, 1974, following the search of theUniversal Gem and Jewlcry Company, Incorporated premises,
ADQLPH LEWIN was_removed to the Chicago Ofiice via
Bureau car where he was fingerprinted and photographed.
LEWIN was then removed to the Central Detention
Headquarters, Chicago Police Department 1121 South
State Street,.Chicago, Illinois, where he was held for
safekeeping until his appearance before the United States
Magistrate on April 18, 1974.
On April 18, 1974, ADOLPH LEWIN appeared before
United States Magistrate GLGA JURCO, NDI, Chicago,Illinois. At that time LENIN was represented by Attorney
EDWARD CALLAU$N who advised the United States Magistrate
that his client-waived a preliminary hearing. LEWIN
was then released by United States Magistrate JURCO
on a $15,000 Own Hecognizance  on! Bond, after having beenbound over to the USDL.

Investigation was predicated u on recei t of informationqcwhich was received from Detectiv  Dallas, Texas,k7 Police Department, who advised on February 15, 1974, that thesuite in the Statler Hilton Hotel where the well-known night cluband television entertainer LEE LIBERACE was staying had beenburglarized. Dete t&#39;v a &#39; &#39; &#39; c i gfurther advised that investigationdetermined that no a arent &#39;pp orced entry had been used to gain
entrance to LIBERACE&#39;s suite or to the metal aluminum suitcase
containing a combination lock, where LIBERACE kept his jewelryHe stated that a latent fingerprint and partial palm print wasdeveloped on the aluminum suitcase and alson on an ash tray,
however, no elimination prints were taken. LIBERACE estimatedhis loss of jewelry at $75,000.

advised that he and Mr. 1.1; ERACE um: thea approximately 7:00 n.m. on February 14, 1974, forMcFarland Hall where Mr. LILERACE was to perform. He statedat the time he left, he did not observe anyone in the hall,and upon return, at approximately 12:30 on February 15, 1974,he went to put some of the jewelry back into the metal suitcasewhich was loosed and left on a stand in the rocm. At this time,
he discovered r. LI5ERACE&#39;S metal suitcase bad been opened and
some of the jewelry containers bad been emptied and put on the
floor, e sated, in addition, he discovered seven one dollar
bills, which had been left in another room in an ashtray to be
missing along with a bolo necktie with a silver dollar dated1889 and a LeCoulter diamond white gold wristwatch, valued at
$600, missing.

uA search warrant was obtained and authorized complaint/ filed before United States Magistrate, Chicago, Illinois,charging LEWIN with violation of Title 18, Section 2315,United States Code. A search warrant was executed in theearly evening hours of April 17, 1974, and LEWIN was arrested.This search revealed numerous trays of rings believed identifi-able with burglary of a jewelry salesman, Hammond Company,i staying at the TraveLodge Hotel, 4500 Harry Hines Boulevard, Dallas, Texas, March l7, 1974, also proceeds of several localA burglaries were recovered. A search of LEWIN&#39;s person revealed, a platinum pocked watch with letter "L" encrusted and surroundedwith diamonds identifiable with a watch stolen from LIBERACE onFebruary 14  15, l974, in Dallas, Texas.

U. S. District Court  USDC!, Northern District oi Illinois
 NDI!, Chicago, Illinois, to two separate indictments.
LEIIN had pled guilty to a violation of the U. S. Income
Tax Law and also to giving false statements to the
Treasury Department concerning transactions involving the
buying and selling of gold and silver.
Inquiry by the Chica o Division determined that k;7 ;/in 2/l7/74, the hotel rooa  , a salesan
tor the Hammond Company, San tonic, Texas, had been
hurglarized and the ooapan s ewelry line stolen. At thetime of this incidenhvas residing at the
Travelodge Hotel, 4500 arry lines Boulevard, Dallas, Texas.
It also deterained that a portion of this stolen Jewelry
bore the trade name "Princess" and other of the stolen
iteas would hear a company tag which consists of the initials
"BIB" in a diamond.D79

By comunication dated March 5, 1974, the Dallas
Office of the FBI advised that betveen the hours of 7:00 Pl
and 12:45 Al, February 15, 1974, Jewelry valued at $24,065,
belonging to LEE LIBEBACE, a sell-known nightclub and
television entertainer,was stolen from LlBERACE&#39;s suite
at the Statler-Hilton Hotel, Dallas, Texas, where he had
been registered since February l0, 1974. According to this
Dallas communication, at the tune of this burglary, LIBERACE
was performing at the Icfarland Hall Auditorium, Dallas,
Texas. The Dallas communication further related that
LlB8RACE&#39;s Jewelry, prior to the theft, was maintained in
an aluminum suitcase equipped with a combination lock and
subsequent examination determined there was no forcibleentry into LIBERACE&#39;s suite or the metal suitcase LIBERACE Q?advised interviewing officers that only he and
know the combination to this suitcase.

12! 368-1647, 12! 368-1648, and 12! 368-1649, and
from the premises known as the Universal Gm and Jewelry
Cmnpany, 1nc., located at 5 North Wabash, Suite 604,
Chicago, Illinois. On larch 20, 1974, these docunents were
forwarded to the Justice Departmmt and on April 2, 1974,
the U. S. AG approved this request.

On the evening of April I7, 1974, ADOLPH LEVIN,doing business as Universal Gem and Jewelry Company, &#39;
Incorporated, Room 604, 5 North Wabash Avenue, was con-tacted at his place of business.
On this occasion when initially contacted, b$P9¢if1 588111? 5 ,alone approachedLEVIN s office, R e , which is equipped with an
electrically operated door lock, and rang the door to gain
entry. At that time, through the glass door and windows,snap could observe umu sitting at the 19:1; hand
de  as you enter the premises! facing the corridor. With
LEVIN at that time, with his back to the corridor, was
an unknown fenale cudomer. LEVIN u n hearing the bell,looked up and not recognizing SA 6 approached thedoor where SA identified himself by displaying his
credentials. LEWIN upon examining the crecentials, admit-
ted the Agents to the premises.
Upon entering the prenis d after againidentifying himself to LEWIN, SAsuggested that
LEVIN finish his business with his customer,
Subsequently, after the customer left the premises,
LEWIN was advised that he was under arrest for a violation
of the Interstate Transportation of Stolen Property Statute.
LEVIN was also advised that a search warrant had been issued
for the premises and was at that time furnished a copy of
this search warrant.
