Civil Rights Divisio CRD!,
Department, to conduct a limited
investigation into the death of
George Jackson, a convict who was
shot and killed by a guard during
Jackson&#39;s attempt to escape from
San Quentin Prison, California,
on 8/21/71, in which three guards and
two other inmates were also slain
allegedly by Jackson and another
confederate. CRD requests autopsy
report on Jackson and copies of
investigative reports prepared by
prison officials and local law
enforcement agencies.

THIS IS A LIMITED INVESTIGATION
This investigation was predicated upon receipt of a
memo from DAVID L. NORMAN, Assistant Attorney General, Civil
Rights Division, United States Department of Justice, to
the Director of the FBI, which requested the following:
This Division has recently received several
Congressional inquiries concerning George Jackson,
a convict at San Quentin Prison, who was killed during
a riot at that facility on August 21, 1971.
In order to determine whether Jackson&#39;s death &#39;
could have involved violations of 18 U.S.C. 241 or 242,
please conduct the following limited investigation:
 l! Obtain a copy of any reports of Jackson&#39;s
autopsies.
! obtain copies of any reports on this incident
prepared by prison officials or local law enforcement agencies

The investigation of the riot at San Quentin Prisonduring which GEORGE LESTER JACKSON was killed, was conductedby both the Prison Authorities and the investigators fromthe Marin County District Attorney&#39;s Office. The investiga-tion was coordinated by the District Attorney, Mr. BRUCEBALES, and all investigative reports from both the Prisonofficials and the District Attorney&#39;s investigators wereincorporated into one report, which is being maintained by the
District Attorney. -
As a result of the investigation, the case waspresented to the Marin County Grand Jury and indictment against

Jackson&#39;s adult arrest, on 9-18-60, at Los Angeles, followed the
gunpoint robbery, with an accomplice, of a service station operator. Theaccomplice allegedly wielded the gun, threatening to kill the operator, and the pai
secured $71.00 loot, which they split. Jackson later admitted participation in therobbery but claimed to be unaware of a gun being used, and further claimed he
could not remember what occurred because he had been dninkingalib weekend and
was dizzy. He was subsequentl sentenced to serve an indeterminate sentence. D
