citizen, who had been a member of the Czechoslovakian Communist
Party since 1945, was to visit the United States on the cultural
exchange program in 1966. He indicated an intention to visit friends
in the United States included among whom was John Steinbeck.
The files of the identification Division were checked
and found to contain no additional pertinent data concerning the above y
individuals.
A copy of this communication has not been sent to the
Attorney General.

However, our files reveal that in late 1939 Burns,whose true name is Natha.r&rnbaum, was the subject of a
smuggling jewels and clot investigation which was not con-
ducted by this Bureau. He was subsequently convicted, given a
suspended sentnce of one year and one day, and paid an $8, 000fine. 4'-'11?!

Care of Children in Wartime, which organization allegedly had Communist Partyaffiliations and connections. Burns, however, was believed to be unaware of the

In the early 1940's, Burns was reported to be a member of the iHollywood Democratic Committee, cited as a communist front by the CaliforniaSenate Fact-Finding Committee On Un-American Activities in a 1948 report. InJune, 1945, Borne was also listed as a member of the executive council oi the Citizense Committee of the Arts, Sciences and Professions
