to land in England, or if he landed that he was requested
because the British Government considered him an undesir-
able person. This action, I believe, took place during the last war, during
which time, by the way, I was an official in Washington.
Perhaps on'account of that but definitely regardless of that, 1r.
Hearst and his newspapers have at all opportunities shown animosity tonard
the British Empire and particularly toward England, which, generally, may
be immaterial,and as he owns the papers I belie e that he nay have a right?
generally to express his pcrsonal viewpoints, but at a time like this when
the British Empire, and particularly England, and the United States and its
allies are fighting a common enemy, it appears to ne that any venomous pub-
lic attack upon England with an attempt to create in the mind oi the readers
of his = ers that England is shirking its duty and that other nations andPep
that parts of the British Common ealth are taking a similar viewpoint comes »'
pretty near being a fifth columnist activity in that it is obviously desi
to create discontent and it it should succeed too greatly in doing so and
therefore inju e the uelfare of the United States of America, it night al-
most, it would appear to me, be considered treasonable.
I enclose, hoping that you will have the opportunity of reading it,
the article to which I particularly refer, this article appearing in the
Boston Sunday Advertiser of January 25, 1942 and, no doubt, in all other
papers in which Hr. Hearst has an interest.
