Agent gin the Domestic Intelligence Division advises
that Pearson eta e that Attorney General Brownell had refused to l ~
tell reporters who is handling the ----- case against Senator lIcCartiui.
However, Pearson reported that a low ranking lawyer in the Criminal
Division, IAwrenc¢"R'egan, is sitting on it. Pearson went on to
state it almost looks as if the Justice Department is trying to stall.
until the statute of limitations expires this Summer, then it will "
be too 1ate'to prosecute. _- ___
This no doubt refers to the report of the Senate Committee v"

he likes to be considered a different breed of Big-lRich Texan. Short, squat and bespectacled, his
lphysical appearance alone qualies him for a spe-
cial role in any -Edna Ferber cast of Texas char-lacters. '
' His demeanor is different. He's not a blusterer. He's
Isoft-spoken and deliberate. If he's a big spender, as hisMexican rant-hes_ and his eet of DC-3s attest, he doesn't
lhunt headlines. _And if he's a big operator, as his om'1er-
iship of some-'19 corporations implies, he's not ostentatious
[about it
' He might even see the irony in the fact that, for all
1 millions, his current prominence stems only fmm his
l nnection with Joe McCarthy.
But of his regard for McCarthy, he makes no secret.
"Ther§s nobody in this country that's doing the job Mc-
Carthy's done," Murchison told The Post. "And I tell you
there's nobody better than Joe to do it."

Last night on the 5 o'clock broadcast from Buffalo,
Taylor Grant, on the Old Gold Hour mentioned that Senator McCarthy
and J. Edgar Hoover met today Sunday! at La Jolla, California.
Grant said Hr. Hoover stated that Senator McCarthy was a friend,
and after a few more eentences which I don't recall, laid Mr. Hoover
refused to comment on Senator HcCarthy'a techniques but had said
he felt all Congressional Committees served a good purpose.

Dear Ir. Hoover:
Your comments quoted by the Associated Press
the other day in reference to Senator McCarthy, were
indeed gratifying to read.
lith all the atuse and disrespect that is being
aimed at the Senator these days, it lust have been a
very encouraging thing for him to hauethe occasional
opportunity to hear some complimentary remarks.
As you should so well know from your own personal
experience with past governmental agencies and officials,
any group or persons taking exception to their line of
so called reasoning, has a tough, disheartening fight
on their hands.
" ' It is my earnest prayer that God will bless you and
your associates with continued health, success and
haapiness-
Sincerely yours, a fellow American,
/M i
