Phil Mote directs the institute, which was created in 2007 by the state Legislature and is charged with facilitating research by the Oregon University System on climate change, providing climate change information to the public and assisting local governments in developing climate change policies, practices and programs. Mote will discuss the expected effects of climate change on the Pacific Northwest. Other speakers scheduled include Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy, who will outline what her city is doing to address climate issues, and Mary Christina Wood from the University of Oregon law school, who will discuss legal actions taken by young people against governments they believe are failing to properly manage natural resources for future generations.
