Mail Tribune 100: May 23, 1916 The following news items were drawn from the archives of the Mail Tribune 100 years ago Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted May. 23, 2016 at 12:01 AM Posted May. 23, 2016 at 12:01 AM » Social News May 23, 1916 BOND AMENDMENT TO CHARTER VOTED UPON BY MANY Showery weather and cold, blustering wind ushered in election day in Medford and contributed somewhat to a diminished vote upon the proposed amendment to the city charter authorizing the issuance of bonds for railroad building. Opponents of the bond issue made up in energy what they lacked in number, and worked energetically against the proposed amendment. But there was no lack of enthusiasm among the advocates, and they were out in large numbers. At 2 o'clock nearly 1,000 votes had been cast, of which 400 were sworn in. The vote by wards at that hour was: First ward, 304; second ward, 364; third ward, 264. The women vote had just begun to be cast in quantity. Indications favor a total vote exceeding 1,600 will be cast before the polls close at 7 o'clock tonight. That the bonds will carry by a vote of three or four to one is the general prediction. The first ward polling place, 310 East Main street (May store building). The second ward polling place is Flynn's electric store, 200 West Main. The third ward polls are the city hall. Unregistered voters can be registered at the latter place. THE MEADOWS A test run on the rich ore from the cinnabar Nos. 1 and 2 claims gave four pounds 4 1-2 ounces of quicksilver from less than ten pounds of ore without drying before retorting. Not much question about the richness when its worth a dollar a pound as it comes from the ground. The Ashland Iron Works are casting another D retort for use on the Blue Jay mine. These retorts weigh about 1,500 pounds but are very efficient and a decided improvement on the pipe retorts. A new ball team known now as the Beagles, which is made up of the farmers, Antioch and Sams Valley teams, will play the Meadows team Sunday at the Meadows ball grounds.
