"Choro comes from a mix of European music and Afro-Brazilian rhythms, associated with freedom of interpretation by instrumentalists," says composer and guitarist Douglas Lora of Trio Brasileiro. "It's more of an approach to certain music and rhythms, the way you play it." Lora, along with mandolin player Dudu Maia and percussionist Alexandre Lora, will present their original take on traditional choro and samba at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 30, at the Old Siskiyou Barn in Ashland. When the royal families of Portugal fled Napoleon's troops in 1808, they brought the dances and music of their culture to Brazil, where they encountered developing Afro rhythms, Lora says. "There was a fusion of court ballroom dances with African rhythms," Lora says. "As musicians, we are devoted to the traditions of choro, and we acclimate many other musical influences and elements to keep it growing." Trio Brasileiro performs choro by Jacob do Bandolim, Ernesto Nazareth and others, along with its own compositions, which are modern reflections of a traditional musical form. Siblings Douglas and Alexandre Lora and Maia make San Paulo and Brasilia their homes when they're not touring the U.S., which they do a couple of times a year. Formed in 2011, Trio Brasileiro is half the members of the Brazilian choro ensemble Caraivana. The project's first U.S. tour in 2012 met with sold-out performances and standing ovations at concerts in New York City, Minneapolis, Portland, Seattle, Louisville and other cities. It was an introduction to American audiences that made a lasting impression. Trio Brasileiro released its first recording, "Simples Assim," in 2012. In 2013, the trio collaborated with Israeli clarinetist Anat Cohen and created a new CD not yet officially released. Titled "Alegria Da Casa," it's a collection of instrumental music that captures the joy, spirit and happiness of Maia's home in Brasilia, where it was recorded. The CD will be available at the Ashland concert. Maia taught the particular aspects of choro music from 2007 to 2010 at the Mandolin Symposium led by David Grisman and Mike Marshall at the University of California in Santa Cruz. Maia, Cohen and the Lora brothers have taught since 2011 at Centrum Foundation's Annual Choro Workshop in Port Townsend, Wash. A versatile guitarist, Douglas Lora moves between classical and popular music. He and Joao Luiz have played together for 15 years as Brasil Guitar Duo. As the seven-string guitarist of Caraivana, Lora tours worldwide, collaborating with such artists as Paquito d'Rivera, Marco Pereira, Jovino Santos Neto, Ney Rosauro, Marina Piccinini and others. He joined his brother and Maia to form a trio dedicated to traditional Brazilian music. Lora also has performed as a soloist with the Dallas Symphony, Houston Symphony, Dayton Philharmonic, Orquesta Metropolitana of Sao Paolo and the Orchestra of the Americas. He studied composition and classical guitar at Faculdade de Artes Alcantara Machado in Sao Paolo and received a master’s degree in performance from the University of Miami. He won a Concert Artists Guild award in 2006 with the Brasil Guitar Duo and has eight recordings and five original film soundtracks to his credit.
