Byrne pitches South to win COOS BAY � Sophomore right-hander Darci Byrne tossed a one-hit shutout and senior Lindsey McHenry smashed a three-run home run as South Medford launched its softball season with a rain-shortened, 9-0 victory over Marshfield. The second game of the scheduled doubleheader was washed out. Byrne struck out 10, walked six and didn�t allow a hit until Marian Ward punched a line drive to right-center field with one out in the fourth inning. The Panthers gave Byrne all the support she needed with five runs in the first inning. With one out and runners on first and third, McHenry crunched a 2-0 pitch to the left-center field gap that rolled to the fence. McHenry finished with three hits, three RBIs and three runs. Amanda Blair had three hits, scored twice and drove in two runs, Katie Kaufman had two hits and scored twice and Kaylee Rickert had two hits and scored three times. South started freshmen at shortstop (Kaufman) and third base (Kristen Palazzolo) and had four sophomores in the lineup as well. Grants Pass fell to 2-1. The Pirates� Tiffany Ross hit into a fielder�s choice and then came around to score the go-ahead run on an error in the top half of the ninth. Kelsie Russell added an RBI hit to give the Pirates a two-run cushion heading into the bottom half of the inning. Shannon Reed added two hits for Phoenix, and pitcher Ross allowed six hits and walked one. Cathy Richard went 2-for-4 to lead the Cavers. Baseball RED BLUFF 13, EAGLE POINT 2 � At Red Bluff, Calif., a seven-run fifth inning blew open a close game and sent Eagle Point to a season-opening loss. The Eagles walked four batters and committed three errors to help send Red Bluff to its third win in as many games. Mike Martin struck out 12 Eagle Point batters and held the Eagles to just six hits. Greg Horn and Ryan Garrett each went 2-for-4 for Eagle Point, while Kyle Gray belted a solo home run in the second inning. The Eagles play West Valley (6-0) in Anderson, Calif., at 1 p.m. today. MARY�S RELAYS � St. Mary�s Dan Tribelhorn, Jordan Frankel, Mike Agosta and Trevor Coolidge won the boys distance medley in the Crusaders� relay meet with Rogue River and Cascade Christian. The four were timed in 11 minutes, 43 seconds. The Crusaders also took first in the girls 4x200-meter relay with Kristen Zielony, Jessica McHenry, Sarah Greene and Trina Stout posting a time of 1:58.0. Shannon Roberts won the 100 hurdles with a time of 18.0 seconds for Cascade Christian. Jordan Ferrell from Cascade Christian took first in the javelin and high jump.
