PREP ROUNDUP: Cascade’s winning streak ends at 16 By Mail Tribune staff Updated: May 06, 2022 10:34 PM A A Cascade Christian’s Austin Waits threw six strong innings in the opener, but Brookings-Harbor was able to salvage a split and snap the top-ranked Challengers’ 16-game winning streak in Friday’s baseball doubleheader at Lithia & Driveway Fields. The Challengers won the opener 8-2 before falling 8-3 in the nightcap to the Bruins, who saw their own 38-game conference winning streak snapped a week ago by Douglas. Cascade Christian (18-2, 8-1 FWL), playing as the visitor after the twin bill was moved to Medford due to weather, used a five-run fourth inning to take command in the opener. Owen Thompson later homered as part of a two-RBI day. Cody Reece went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in Game 1, while Cole Shields and Liam Benade also had three hits apiece for the Challengers. Benade hit a solo home run in the nightcap against Brookings ( 13-6, 6-3), while Triston Wallace was 3-for-5 with a run scored and Waits finished with a pair of RBIs. Cole Stofflet pitched well in relief of Ashton Moody, who had to be replaced on the mound in the third inning due to injury, but the Challengers opened the door for the Bruins with a couple errors in the fourth inning and Brookings wound up scoring four runs to go up 7-2. Cascade Christian battled back with a run in the sixth, sparked by a one-out double by CJ Bonner, and loaded the bases in the seventh but could not push a run across to create a comeback. THURSTON 10-5, CRATER 0-3: At Central Point, Crater saw top-ranked Thurston score twice in the top of the eighth inning of Game 2 to secure a sweep of the Midwestern League doubleheader at Anhorn Field. The Comets dropped to 8-13 overall and 6-6 in league play, while Thurston moved to 19-2 and 13-1 in the MWL. GRANTS PASS 8, ASHLAND 1: At Grants Pass, Luke Baker’s grand slam in the third inning provided all the offense Grants Pass would need to snap Ashland’s four-game winning streak late Thursday night. After the Grizzlies (15-4) took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning, Baker’s homer gave the Cavemen (11-9) a 4-1 edge during their five-run third inning. Luke Morgan earned the win at the mound, pitching two innings in relief of starter Tyler Ireland. Morgan struck out five, Ireland fanned six over the first three innings and Troy Osborne struck out all six batters he faced to close the game. Caleb Martinez finished 2-for-3 with an RBI for Grants Pass, while Osborne had three stolen bases and Morgan scored twice. The Grizzlies’ lone run came after a single from Ben Bleicker brought home Cooper Rathbun. MARY’S 8-8, SUTHERLIN 1-5: St. Mary’s got five no-hit innings from starter Beau Aldrich and four innings of standout relief from Eli Haynes in each end of the Crusaders’ Far West League sweep. Aldrich struck out nine and walked three before making way for Grant Russo, who threw the final two innings to go with a 3-for-4 outing at the plate in Game 1. Haynes, in relief of starter Travis Johnson, put out the fire after Sutherlin (5-14, 0-9 FWL) had taken a 5-4 lead in the fourth. Haynes allowed just two hits and struck out seven. Haynes was 2-for-4 with two RBIs in Game 1, while Ean Lawrence was 2-for-3 as each starter for St. Mary’s (12-6, 5-4) recorded at least one hit. Jake Pivaroff combined for five hits in the twin bill, and Johnson was 3-for-4 with three runs in Game 2. Boys Golf CLASS 4A DISTRICT 3 CHAMPIONSHIPS: At Eagle Point, Phoenix senior Keola Brown placed third and qualified for the Class 4A state championships with his two-day run at Eagle Point Golf Club. Brown posted a 95 on a rainy Day 2 to finish at 180 for third in the individual competition. Siuslaw’s Ryan Klampe won at 154, with North Valley’s Cruz Kilborn second at 167. North Valley claimed the team title with a 756 and Mazama was second (797). The top two teams and top five individuals advanced to the state tourney. Track & Field WALLY CIOCHETTI INVITATIONAL: At Cottage Grove, Phoenix seniors Elwood Hosking and Sophia Stubblefield swept the boys and girls 1,500-meter runs to highlight the Pirates’ effort in the 14-school event. Hosking won in 4 minutes, 6.98 seconds, and Stubblefield’s winning mark was 4:57.02. Also picking up individual wins for the Pirates were Romi Pulido with a throw of 121 feet, 9 inches in the boys discus and Brisa Bauer’s leap of 31-3 in the girls triple jump. Kyla Potratz finished second in the 800 (2:28.23). Phoenix finished sixth in the boys standings and eighth on the girls side.
