The NCAA Division I-A Highlanders, who were picked to finish sixth in the Big Sky Conference preseason poll, improved to 2-4 and won their second straight by shooting 65 percent, making 14 of 25 3-point attempts and out-rebounding the NAIA Raiders (6-9), 35-20. UCR, which had six players score in double figures, including a game-high 18 points and seven rebounds by sophomore forward Nate Carter, swelled a 53-28 halftime edge to an 88-44 bulge by converting nine straight shots with six coming from 3-point range. SOU, which defeated Cascade Conference rival Western Baptist, 80-76, Thursday night prior to making Friday’s 12½ hour van ride to Southern California, received solid performances from sophomore forwards Jared Abell (16 points, four rebounds), Shea Washington (12 points, four rebounds) and Nick Borrevik (nine points). SOU held 4-0, 6-5 and 9-8 leads in the opening four minutes, but UCR took control with a 16-5 run followed by a 10-0 run shortly before the half. For the sixth-ranked Raiders, Jimmy Grochowsky triumphed at 157 pounds, Brian Wilson won at 165, David O’Brien took the 184 title and Wes Balensifer emerged as the top heavyweight. Lee Ottow and Grant Thompson were runners-up for the Raiders at 133 and 197, respectively, and two SOU competitors placed third — Jess Armstrong (157) and Kyle Simmons (197). Otto qualified for the NAIA national tournament by virtue of his showing. The six-team tournament, for which no team scores were kept, included fourth-ranked Melo and ninth-ranked Emery Riddle. "Even though this was a small tournament, I like to see our guys win titles," SOU coach Mike Ritchey said. "There were three teams from our region there, and so these were important matches. It’ll change the regional rankings at some weights."
