Clement, 36, becomes the second coach of the Raider program, succeeding Jose Chavez, who resigned in December after six seasons. "Coach Chavez did a great job in establishing a strong foundation for SOU soccer, and we are excited for the Jon Clement era to begin," Director of Athletics Dennis Francois said. "I am tremendously impressed by his accomplishments and by his overall approach to intercollegiate soccer." Clement comes to SOU from St. Edward’s University in Austin, Tex., where he guided the NCAA Div. III Hilltoppers to 18 victories over the past two seasons. He earned Heartland Conference coach-of-the-year accolades after his 2004 squad posted a 12-6-2 mark and captured the school’s first-ever league championship. SEU received National Soccer Coaches Association honors for academic excellence last season. The 2001 Violets won a program-record 13 games, including the program’s first Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference championship, and the team advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 the following year. Clement’s NYU teams won five straight NSCAA/adidas Team Academic Awards, and the 2000 edition had the highest cumulative grade point average in college soccer (3.71). The four-time coach-of-the-year recipient began his coaching career in 1994 at Greenwich (Conn.) High School. He went on to oversee the Yankee United Soccer Club in Ridgefield, Conn., and he coached the Under-18 Olympic Development Program in both Connecticut and New Jersey between 1997 and 2000. Clement’s most distinguished pupil is Christie Welsh, and member of the U.S. national team. "I’m very excited about both the potential of the SOU soccer program and the opportunity to work with such an energized and progressive athletic department and administration," Clement said. "‘I’m also impressed by the drive shown by the (returning) players. They are clearly a dedicated bunch and ready to show the country what they can do." Clement inherits 14 players from last year’s Raider team that qualified for the Cascade Conference playoffs for the sixth consecutive season and posted a 7-10-1 overall mark.
