The Raiders (34-17, 17-6 CC), who were dealt a 2-1 setback by the fifth-place Cavaliers (18-27, 6-17) in Game 1, earned hosting rights for the four-team NAIA Region I Tournament, which begins next Thursday morning at University Field in Ashland. SOU mustered only three hits against Cav sophomore ace Annele Huckins (11-12) in the first contest and tied the score at 1-all in the sixth when junior Kim Kraxberger doubled, and freshman pinch- runner Allesha Spradling later scored from third on a wild pitch. CU, however, notched only its second win against Southern since 2001 when Denise Benedict beat out an infield dribbler to second baseman Megan Rock to allow Julie Pitman to score with two outs in the bottom of the seventh. Senior all-star Miranda Gillaspie (19-7) allowed seven hits in taking the loss. Advertisement The Raider bats awakened in Game 2 and pounded CU starter Kristin Donahue (5-10) for six runs on six hits over two innings and plated another six against Huckins in a nine-run third inning. Southern finished with 15 base-knocks in the five-inning, eight run-rule shortened contest. Rock and junior Leann Foster each accounted for three hits in four at-bats, and junior Tanisha Burch launched her team-best sixth home run of the season — a three-run shot to right off Donahue. Freshman Alicia Caudill (7-4) allowed three runs on six hits in a complete-game pitching performance. Southern wraps up the regular-season schedule today with a doubleheader at Western Baptist College in Salem.
