Portland scored all its runs in the second inning of the opener to post a 3-2 victory, then came back to pin a 4-1 loss on the RiverDogs in the nightcap. Southern Oregon fell to 32-16 on the season and will complete a five-game road trip with a noon doubleheader today against the Portland Kings. In the opener, Trevor Hahn’s two-run single sparked the three-run rally that carried the Cardinals to the victory. The RiverDogs took a 1-0 lead in the first when Steve DeClerck singled with one out, stole second, went to third on a ground out and scored on a single by Andy Bartels. Southern Oregon cut the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth inning when DeClerck got things started again when he struck out, but reached first on a third-strike wild pitch. Brent Foster walked and Bartels was safe at first when third baseman Mike Roters could not cleanly field his bunt. DeClerck was picked off from third before Foster advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a wild pitch. Phil Ouellette had two hits for the RiverDogs in the opener. Southern Oregon pitcher Ed Dillahay tossed a three-hit complete game in the nightcap but was the victim of three unearned runs. Dillahay (1-2) struck out five and walked four. The RiverDogs took the initial lead in the second inning when Pat Jolley was hit by a pitch and eventually scored from third on Devon Zupan’s RBI single. Portland took a 2-1 lead in the third, then tacked on two unearned runs in the sixth to go up 4-1. Southern Oregon scored once in the seventh when Jolley doubled and pinch-runner Kenny Halpin came home from third on a ground out by Eric Beasly. Left-hander Jimmy Freeman, an incoming junior at Washington State, pitched a five-hit complete game for Portland. FIRST GAME S.O.
